since the closest we've been to actual shop talk lately is bathroom tile, i thought id add a little.

replaced my O'Reilly's $9.99 voltmeter with a new one from Sears. it was on sale for $22 and i had a giftcard. by far the nicest ive ever owned. it does everything i should need and more. temperature to 500F and frequency are two bonuses ill probably never actually need.

i also built a myself a new welding table. its a sheet of 3/16" mill plate, 40' of 2"x2"x1/4" angle, and about 25' of 1"x1"x3/16" angle. i have yet to put the plywood in the lower shelf.

if anyone sees a good deal on a nice heavy vice let me know.

frequency might be useful for diagnosing vss and abs sensors. maybe distributors. poor mans o-scope.

I've been using my handheld dvom's basically as test lights. If its an important value I drag out the bench unit.

thats exactly why i picked it over the more expensive auto ranging one. the other one didnt have freq. i might have a use for trouble shooting VSS in the near future, but i dont own a distributor and dont care to mess with abs stuff.

That welding table looks like it has already suffered the fate of any horizontal waist high surface in a shop......all sorts of **** gets piled on it. :)

are you going to leave them feedback?

It'd probably go along the lines of, "Excellent seller, I mean literally, I give those titties 4 thumb's up!"

T-posts make a great cutting table. Face the little bump things up. Cut off the spades.

What are your thoughts on expanded metal for the bottom shelf? Watchin the ag shop toolroom go up in smoke, and nearly melting a hole in the top of my foot with slag (while in hightops) has given me a different perspective on where and what I weld around.

I couldn't get my g-pa to stop laughing long enough to help me as I did the happy pants dance. Then he got mad that I ruined a good pair of choos.

Oh, and fwiw, the 4x8 sheet of ex-metal I used on the upper deck on the gooseneck was only 35 bones. A sheet of 3/4" is going to have to cost that much or more (as I have not bought plywood in a few or 5 years and it was 34 a sheet back then and that was fo sho before katrina and all)

just a little tidbit for your inner joo!

I've had 2 firey experiences welding. First was in shop class back in highschool when I was kneeling under a porch railing I was welding on. Turns out when slag hit's your jeans crotch it burns right through. It put a good size hole through my jeans and underwear. Second time was when I was welding on my cage wearing some ripped jeans, slag hit the fray in the pants and set me afire. I jumped out as fast as I could and kind of panicked then ran to the water hose which only further increased the flame size....brings a whole new meaning to flaming underpants.

ive caught frayed clothes on fire dozens of times. you just kinda get to where you recognize the extra heat and slap it out.

thats what leathers are for, because if you weld enough, you finally end up in a position where there is no way around it especially when you work in a fab shop.
