I don't know what wheels you're trying to put on there, but the stock Sami wheels can be turned around so their offset is opposite of what it is now because the mounting surface is flat on both sides. That lets you run 31s or maybe some skinny 33s with stock wheels...

DirrrtyGirl

Yeah, I know. I have some different wheels that I am going to put on it though. Thanx.

I would go with the 4:1 kit first instead of 5.12 gears. My reasoning in this is that you plan to stay with the samurai transfer case, but eventually would be swapping out the axles, so no point in putting much money into them. I'd also go with a 6:1 instead. I don't think it costs much more, and that little rubber band needs all the help it can get. I know people say you should do the axle gears first or at the same time to avoid extra stress on the transfer case, but I don't think you really have to worry about that with 50 hp on a good day.

It didn't smoke at all when I got it, but slowly got more and more. It could just be valve stem seals. Or maybe some rings froze up. The fix for the rings is easy. Get a can of WD40 (in a quart or gallon, not the spray), pull the spark plugs and pour a few ounces in each cylinder. Let it sit for a day then run the starter with the plugs out to remove any WD40 left in there. Change the oil, put it back together and hope it doesn't smoke. The valve stem seals would be a little harder job.

bburris
08-30-2006, 10:36 AM
Also, with t-case gears in a Sami you get a lower high range as well, which will help with street driving like a set of axle gears would.

Look in to a t-case bucket if you plan to do any other mods to the t-case. They're extremely prone to breaking in half.

50 hp on a good day.

64 HP, Thank you very much!

It didn't smoke at all when I got it, but slowly got more and more.

Gave it a tune up and it doesn't smoke anymore.

Sharpe

I'll second the t-case bucket that Burris mentioned. Hasnt Wes frag'd a few sami t-cases? If he hasnt I'm sure at the very least Paul has...

DirrrtyGirl
08-30-2006, 11:24 AM
I would go with the 4:1 kit first instead of 5.12 gears.

The 4-1 kit and heavy duty transfer case mount are future modifications for a reason.

I'm not gonna spend $600 bucks on doing that modification when I can spend a $100 on diffs gears for now.

I wanna make sure that this is the rig I wanna stay with for a while before I dump a bunch of money into it.

I can resell the gears on ebay if I want to, if i decide to put bigger axels in it.

bburris
08-30-2006, 11:37 AM
You can also keep a stock t-case around if you want to swap it back in when you get rid of it. They'll sell on eBay just as easily as axle gears will... It's your rig, though... Build to make yourself happy.

And yes, I think I'd need to take my boots off to count how many fragged Sami t-cases I've seen in the last two years.

savvyaggie
08-30-2006, 01:53 PM
We are going to build it little by little so that she can wheel it at all stages of its build(starting in near stock condition, mild lift, open diffs, etc.). plus that will allow her to start wheeling soon and not have a frame-off project that takes a year to build.

Sammys need t-case and diff gearing. we are starting with the diffs first, so that I am not continueously replacing the t-case. its more fun to wheel than to be broke on tha trail.

The springs in the front are 40 inches long, 3 spring pack. they are the factory rear springs(minus the overload spring), but cleaned up and shot with EZ-Slide graphite paint. I will be putting slightly longer shackles in the front, but I will wait until I get the rear suspension done first.

Made the front bumper out of 1/4 2x4( I thinks weighs more than the whole frame, cuz its like 1/8). 1/4 drop bracket(2x4 cut in half) and tube to match bushing size. I used rocky road perches, Which was a complete waste of money!!! I should on just made my own.

I might be needing some wheel spacers, does anyone have any on hand for 5 on 5.5??

Hey Sharp!! have you found anything out about the carb swap from your buddies???

I still have to figure out what I am going to do about the steering....

Options:

drop pitman arm $97
Z-link $150
or just fab up some ****. $.08

They say that the The Z-link is the best, but I I could fab up the same thing for alot less, considering that it is a trail rig only.

here is a pic of thier Zlink

eight
09-12-2006, 03:13 PM
If the drop pitman arm will make it clear that'd be the best way. Keeps the steering in line for better driving. But then it couldn't drive fast enough to drive bad anyway.

A drop pitman arm should clear. i just figured that would put more torque on the box and frame mount. and this frame is boxed, but really thin.

bburris
09-12-2006, 03:15 PM
Most Sami owners just fab up a copy of that Z-link. It isn't that hard, just be sure to put some bracing on it like the one in the picture.

I've got a few sets you can have if you want, but they are thin and the holes are kind of elongated. savvyaggie
12-06-2006, 09:28 PM
I just finished both driveshafts, and I did it for free!!!!!!

I had to extend both driveshafts due to the extended wheelbase, and I had to do it cheap, cuz thats just me. So here is what I did. I cut each driveshaft in half, I then went to Mack, and found a pipe that had the same I.D. as my D-shafts O.D.(well, as close as i could find). It was a PERFECT fit!!!! I had to slightly tap each end togather. The original driveshaft was 1/8" thick and I sleeved it with pipe that was about 3/16" thick. Which I think is plenty for the 56hp 4banger.

FOR FREE!!!!!!! Cuz the owner of mack wasn't there and so younger guy workin didn't feel like getting on the computer(plus it had a little surface rust), so he just gave it to me.... I had EXACTLY enoung to do both driveshafts. The pic with the piece on the block of wood was what I had left.

YES!!!!! I know it's GHETTO, but it will work and it was FREE!!!!!

savvyaggie
12-06-2006, 09:32 PM
I was going to make square driveshafts, but I only had a difference in length of 1 1/4" from full drop to full compression, and the factory splines have over 4"s of slip. So I really didnt have to have the excess slip. I figured that this is the cheapest and best way to do it. What do ya'll think???

uglyota
12-06-2006, 09:39 PM
I made my rear driveshaft out of pipe. It's the shackle reversals that require a lot of slip, you should be fine. Looks good, now it needs some pink candycane stripes :D

Jess I would hold off on painting it at all until it warms up for good outside (i.e. march or april). Most paints are made to be sprayed at at least 50 degrees and really the higher the temp the better. The coats dry faster when its warmer too. I rattle canned some of the crap I just put on pigpen in the last few days when it was frigid and the paint dried with an ugly ass crinkle finish on a few parts, and it sprayed on really thin all over.

I just got both 3rd members in for the sammy with 5.12 gears. I now have to decide if I should swap the gears into my 3rds, or install these complete. I have steel thirds, and these are aluminum. either way I at least have to swap out the rear spider gears into one of them because of the spline difference.

I will be welding the rear and leaving the front open.

just throw them in like that. the sammy doesnt have that much power anyways,*** and it weighs what a buck twenty-five. aluminium will be plenty strong

I'd swap out the one that you have to change the spiders on and leave the other as is.
