Somehow I thought the tubing we had up at our shop had a smaller ID... Well no bueno, it's ID is too big.

Who ordered the tierod material so you can use a tap?

I do but it is going to cost you $.60 and inch
and you can tap my stuff at the same time

but you would have to tap my steering at the same time as well

you mean as a trade for it? Or tap it in addition to buying it?

You realize it sucks to tap it right? It takes a decent amount of time, plus my taps...

Do you need both tierod and drag link?

P.S. What material do you have anyways?

how bad is taping it, I am sure we can work something out.

The material that I have is an A513/5 1020 DOM 1.50x.375

Well it's fine thread...

So basically I chuck it up in the lathe and face it off. That takes all of 60 seconds. Then depending on how deep you want it, I sit there with a crescent wrench and tap it by hand using the tailstock to hold the tap concentric.

It just takes a while, probably 15-20 minutes a hole, depending on depth. Ask Brian Ritchey or Robert Sharpe, I'm not sure I've let anyone else do it. I think I let Garrett have fun also.

let me see, Ill give you the tube for $15 if you tap mine as well

And all this just costs you time since the school owns all this equipment. JEW

If you've got a manual lathe that starts at full speed tap under power. we do it all the time at work and it's never broken or dulled a tap. lowest speed and just bump it on and off, back it out when it spins in the chuck. Use a ton of tap magic or similar lube on the tap and run coolant on the outside of the material.

i know it works but it sounds so dangerous for expensive taps. i definately wouldnt let someone do that with my borrowed tap.

I'll bet I'm using more expensive taps than you are ;)

Just single tool the fawker with a boring bar.

Hi, I pay for taps! Thats why I let people come in and do it if they want and I don't charge them to use the machine.

P.S. Hello Pot!

yes, but the definition of expensive changes drastically when you are the one that pays for them. (i.e.- doug)

Tie rod and draglink?

Originally I told people $10 per link I believe. So each side was $5... Aren't weld in bungs like $10 a piece? I think $5 a side with me doing the labor is pretty good.

Yeah just single point the threads in place. Some kinda machinist you are haha. Who trained you anyway :flipoff2:

yeah tie rod and drag link, it sounds like a good deal since the tube is worth about $30

15 is fine, i was just justifying my JEW expenses...

although, I hate pulling a crecsent wrench for an hour, but I do realize you had to go pick up the tube, etc...

wow, I'm no expert but that video makes me cringe

I think if I ever own a shop I'd fire someone on the spot for storing the chuck handle in the lathe, and lack of safety goggles is pretty sweet too.
