I assume disco's didnt come with hydro and you are kludging it together? That looks like a 90's chevy booster.

robertf03
01-26-2007, 09:15 PM
correct, and its the wrong master cylinder as I just found out

and I need one more 16mm o ring to -6 JIC adapter. Other than that its going smoothly. Fortunately I've got a junkyard line I can have crimped at the hydraulic shop tomorrow to get me going while I wait until monday to order the correct adapter from PSC (or not mess with it at all if it works)

i was just wondering if you were doing it b/c the old set-up didnt work well, or if it was just cheaper to do this than it was to buy a new rover booster.

i was just wondering if you were doing it b/c the old set-up didnt work well, or if it was just cheaper to do this than it was to buy a new rover booster.

rover brakes are a little inadequate, especially with the larger tires. I could never lock them up if there wasn't ice on the road. So far I've probably got the same amount of money in it if I was to replace them or do this.

robertf03
01-28-2007, 06:30 PM
time to boost the steering pressure, it whines like a little *****

73bronco
01-28-2007, 06:42 PM
probably just has air in the booster, did you bleed it?

Sharpe
01-28-2007, 06:54 PM
Even if all it needs is to be bled, I would still do the PS mods cause it makes the brakes work ALOT better. Pigpen's brakes kick major ass, I can lock em up at what I believe to be 40-50 mph (no speedo). But yes the booster takes awhile to bleed, I have done the one in pigpen when I built it and the one in my crewcab when I replaced it and it took awhile both times.

It just occured to me that the rover pump might be different than a regular saginaw type so what are your plans for boosting the pump up.

robertf03
01-28-2007, 07:10 PM
its a german copy of the tc saginaw pump. but I replaced it with a saginaw when the bearing went out.

what do you mean by bleed it? I was planning on pumping the brakes a few times and turning the wheel back and forth. Did you have to crack lines and stuff?

73bronco
01-28-2007, 07:42 PM
You need to jack the front end up and turn the wheels lock to lock about 20-30 times to get most of the air out, there will still be a little in there but it works its way out after about a week of normal driving

robertf03
01-28-2007, 07:56 PM
threw 2 washers in there, it doesn't whine at idle any more but it does when the brakes are applied or when steering. Is that what everyone elses did?

These brakes are amazing, even with the whine. This truck stops exactly how it should, but there is no power assist when its off. Is that nitrogen canister a consumable that need to be replaced?

73bronco
01-28-2007, 09:36 PM
Its most likely just air in the system causing the noise, but how'd you tee into the pump for the return? That canister just has a little spring in it (never needs recharging)

Graystroke
01-28-2007, 09:48 PM
but the check valve may be bad. my brakes were never that bad...and they are really good on the LWB b/c of the hydro-pump they have for the ABS...which also make sthem work w/ the engine off...just gotta have the key on.

so how much for the hydro? I need to come take a look at all this...maybe I'll get my truck inspected and start driving it again :D you know where I cn get some disco seats?

robertf03
01-28-2007, 10:09 PM
Grayson there are no good disco seats to be found, especially if yours are manual. I kluged mine together using some parts off a power seat and swapping the passenger seat into the driver, but its still no where close to perfect.

Jeep seats are really close, I had a YJ seat bolted in, just have to drill a couple of holes. Bestop makes some nice ones.

price... too much

$40 at the junkyard, $60 for a new master

probably 250 for the rest of the chit from PSC, Brakequip, hydraulic shops, misc. brake lines that I redid.

I need one more 16mm adapter to get it perfect. I had to reuse the stock gearbox return line and a barb fitting to get it driveable, I couldn't find a -6 so I had to stack adapters and theres not enough clearance for them so the reservoir isn't in its final resting spot (the reason there are no pics :flipoff2: )

robertf03
01-28-2007, 10:16 PM
but how'd you tee into the pump for the return?

Mine had a remote reservoir setup from the factory. I wanted a filter and I needed a 2nd return fitting so I went with the PSC reservoir.

blew a caliper seal today and its leaking from plugs that haven't been turned since it left England. Could too much steering pump pressure do this?

73bronco
01-29-2007, 11:35 PM
could just be a matter of how hard you could push on the brakes before, the booster just makes it easier to put the pressure on it you need to lock em up. Could you lock the brakes up before?

stx4wheeler
01-30-2007, 12:32 AM

on the seal yes i could imagine it being from to much pressure. chalk one up for over engineering :gigem:

73bronco
01-30-2007, 04:15 PM
the power steering pressure has no impact on the amount of pressure in the brake system, thats like saying the vacuum pressure in a vacuum booster is making the seal leak.

mudtoy67
01-30-2007, 04:28 PM
The power steering pressure (or vacuum) does have an effect on braking pressure, how do you think the brakes are "boosted"? :confused2 Technically you are correct, the pressure from the PS does not directly affect the brakes. The booster assists you in applying pressure to the brakes, the more boost you have the more pressure you can apply.

Like was mentioned earlier, maybe you're pressing a lot harder than you realize now that you have the mega-boost. Or maybe it's just that crazy aloomineeum wagon you're drivin'

robertf03
01-30-2007, 06:49 PM
I think I'm pushing the pedal too much, might take some time to get used to not having to stand on the pedal anymore.

Brian heres my theory on whats being boosted.... the booster input rod and output rod do not move at a 1:1 ratio, is more like 1:1.5 I think the hydraulic or vacuum assist just makes up for that extra effort required to move. With no assist the brakes should still be capable of outputting the same pressure.

Might have something to do with burst rating and stuff I haven't studied yet, or I could be totally wrong.

Still growls when I hit the brakes... another odd thing is when the truck is off I still get one or 2 more pumps, but the pedal is much easier to press when the engine is off than when its running. Makes me think something is seriously f'd up. Its also spewing fluid out of the reservoir a little bit, but I do have a slightly pinched supply line to the pump. Waiting on a fitting in the mail to correct that.

mudtoy67
01-30-2007, 07:39 PM
I'm not necessarily talking about what part of the booster/mc is getting the pressure. I'm just saying that when you have more boost pressure (i.e. more PS pump pressure), for the same amount of pressure you apply to the brake pedal, you're going to get more pressure applied to the brake mc, which in turn applies more pressure to the hydraulics.

I might just be talking out of my ass though. :gigem:

holy **** flem. You're not seriously going to spend $2800 on a rover motor are you?

Graystroke
03-29-2007, 08:08 AM
$2800 sounds steep. GEMS and 14CUX is Lucas. Bosch is on 99 and up Discovery II's and Range Rover's. it makes more low end torque, etc. the block is beefier, different front cover, oild pump, yada, yada. I think the 4.6 was 300ft/lbs at 2200 RPM. you can tell a Bosch b/c of the "thor" intake. It is the intake w/ the equal length intake runners and it looks kinda like an LS1 intake.
I rebuilt my engine in the RR for about $1100 all total. I didn't replace the pistons though and just had it honed out and out in new rings and bearings..the 4.2 I used only had like 30K miles and the cross hatch was still visible.
I don't now if you have to use a space or not. I know the bearing sizes are all different on the 4.6....go to aluminumv8.com for info on component size.

looks like abrasive discs have too much deflection
flycutters are cheap so I ordered one and some inserts, J&L does free next day air so sick fab should be happening this weekend.

Does that thing get up enough speed for them to actually work? What about a regular grinding disk?

take video when you use it b/c I think parts will fly! I bet that drill press has a few thousandths end play in all directions (up/down right/left). It is gonna snag like a hang nail!
I would modify the grinding disc...maybe some kind of steel backing to get rid of the deflection? are there any metal diamond/carbide metal grinding disc.
I would have tried an end mill first.
what size flycutter did you get?
anyways, good luck!

http://www.georgiagrindingwheel.com/Pictures/cambench.gif

maybe one of these w/ a 1/4" backer plate, run a bolt through the middle hole to clamp the backing to the disc. use the excess bolt to chuck it into the drill press.

DRAGOONRANCH
12-27-2007, 01:28 AM
I would think that it would end up bieng too thick, and you would be limited to only half the wheel as you would end up hitting the bolt head. On some regular angle grinder grinding disks, they have the recess to keep the mounting hardware up out of the way. The way you talked about the bolt would be real good w/ one of these and you could grind some of the bolt head down if you needed so it would clear.

EDIT: Looking at that picture again, some of those may have a recessed hole in them.

Tubing will probably have to wait, since the bends aren't critical and the hoop is 2 different tube sizes with very tight diamaters (and mostly for show) I'm thinking a harbor tubing/pipe bender would work fine just fine. (unless someone in town has some 1.75 and 1 dies in smallish diameters and some material that doesn't have sentimental value)

I don't think so, the one on there now is freshly rebuilt and works great. This last one that broke came from the junkyard. Since I've put the MSD 6t box on there it was hard to start and would require two or three tries before it fired up. I thought it was a problem with the RPM convertor box for the efi. It acts like a factory vehicle now with the fresh starter. I'm hoping this one was just fooked from the beginning. Either way, I'm never wheeling without a spare starter.
