I thought I would share from my 2/9/07 purchase at Mack BS.

5 - 4.82 - 24.10 - 2 x 2 x 1/4 square tubing
1 - 2.94 - 2.94 - 3/16 x 6 flat bar
1 - 0.92 - 0.92 - 3/16 x 2 flat bar

Maybe we can keep this going to track how much this stuff goes up/down depending on dates and vendor.

I've got a bunch of receipts from Mack out in the garage, but I don't want to look at them.

BTW, Pioneer is worthless unless you're building a house/shed.

for small materials like that you are probably better off buying online.

For my axle project I've used 3 different companies so far to get the best prices on stuff.

If you just walk in there with cash in hand and are anywhere from $2-$17 short, they'll just take it. They might take less, but that's the biggest "discount" I've ever had.

mack told me he didnt carry HREW and i had to go to the muffler shop to get 1.75"x.120" b/c thats what they use on exhaust systems. i cant stress enough how pleasant i was trying to be. i didnt get ugly till well after he was spewing bs at me. that guy can suck my balls.

I always had good luck there, they thought the Scout was *****in. Just like every redneck in the world they either used to have one or had a friend that had one that would, and I quote, "Go An-eee-ware, you couldn't get that thing stuck" I must be a God amongst Rednecks, I've gotten mine stuck several times!

agjohn02
04-04-2007, 02:56 PM
yes, me too. prolly just one stick though. i may abandon my principles to save a trip to houston as long as i dont have to go to mack to get it.

CRaSHnBuRN
04-04-2007, 03:52 PM
honestly I only need around 6 ft of the 1.5 stuff. I want it to splice the 1.75x1.20 together since I'm working with a limited number of feet. Plus, I may need a little of it to make my cage design work. I have around 4 ft (maybe a little more) of 1.5x.250 that was left over from my steering, but I would hate to use that unless I really have to

You usually dont have to wait to get it if you buy local. Thats the reason I usually dont mail order it.

much cheaper than I thought it would be at first.

That isn't bad at all... They must charge their actual cost. That evens out when you add your time and tax to walking in somewhere that may not have exactly what you need...

Who are you using to buy? I've checked speedy metals and online metals and they both charge an arm and leg for shipping and packaging.

Looking to buy 12" of 3/4"x3" flat bar, which is like $10, but then speedy metals wants to charge $9 for packaging and $13 for shipping. Online isn't as bad, just $12 for shipping, but still, it's more than I'm paying for the metal.

metal express, metals depot, a couple others. Only order confirmation I can find right now is for 8.54 in shipping for a 72" tube.

Even if it costs more its worth the convenience. Didn't Krebs get denied a sale because they deemed his project unsafe?

And for the metal pricing, 11" of 3-1/4"x1" flat stock for $2.

3/16" x 4" x 20' flat bar = $28.56

5x3x1/4" angle iron, 10ft.-$33
1.5x1.5x3/16" box tubing, 20ft.-$37

if this angle is for rockers, i'd rethink it for many reasons.

angle has that radius where the two plates meet so it wouldn't but up to the tub the way you want. a brake will be more better

1/4" is way too thick. 1/8" is plenty if you know how to drive, maybe even thinner.

getting flat plate cut and bent will let you have the design you want, not make you half ass something around sub par materials chosen only on the basis of availabilty and least amount of legwork in aquiring them.

1 stick of 3/4"x3/4"x1/8" angle-$17

1 stick of 6"x3/16" flat bar-$40

I haven't had a chance to see if they sell scrap at thier location near me. Fastenal sells smaller amounts, but their prices are very high.

Anyone ever stop at that place on 290 between houston and the turn off for HW6? I think its called metal depot or something.
