View Full Version : Mounting a high lift jack to Roll Cage

So I need some creative ideas on how where to mount a high lift to my roll cage. Ideally it would be somewhere semi-protected, but not interfere to much with the back seat area, but that may be hopeless on both counts. These things (http://fourtreks.com/hi_lift_roll_bar_mounts_1_75_.html) are pretty, but jeez, $89 to mount a $50 jack that's probably gonna get mangled next time I roll hard?

Ideas?

Not lockable if you're worried about that, but these are pretty cool. Sierra Expeditions is a great vendor as well.

weld two bolts to the cage, use wing nuts to secure the jack, then drill out the end of the bolt so that you can put a small lock on it if you think someone will try to steal it. ten bucks and you are done.

Like kevin said or what I used on mine were some u-bolt thingies that are used on towers that my dad had extra of. The piece that slides over the u-bolt is made to fit around tube so it fits snugly against the cage and doesnt slip. The holes in the jack fit over the part of the ubolt sticking out and then uses a plate to sammich the jack to it. Use one on each side and one has a lock on it. Very simple and removable. Probably find the clamps at a radio shack maybe or online.
like this but w/o the thingy on the left

exhaust clamps and a wingnut on one of the bolts works well too

Hmm, I like those Quick Fist things, Kevin. Then I could move it if I had too. I am not concerned about lockable. I saw a do it your self using exhause hangers somewhere on the web, but it looked like a pain to get the jack on & off.

I also need to figure out where on the cage I am going to stick it, any opinions there? Maybe I could use those quick fist deals and attach it to the tire carrier. Might stick out too much or get whacked hard if I roll though.

maybe in one of these spots if you have room....on the inside of the tube, not the outside ;)
the yellow line is the jack standing up right infront of the tire...depending on how much room you have there, the tip of the jack might be sticking out or you might be able to cut the tip off and shorten it

is there room straight across behind the seats?

Ok, I went & did some measuring after Josephs sweet schematics got me thinking. Dark Blue or Red would barely fit, but neither would work on the inside, and the foot of the jack would stick out awkwardly. It's only 43" from floor to cieling so yellow & green are out unless I cut down the jack & Handle. Green would tricky with the air shock & yellow with the battery (been thinking about moving that anyway though). I could turn yellow about 45 degrees and stick it in there at an angle, but it would kill a good chunk of the cargo room behind the seat which is current foll of two tool tupperwares...

Light blue might have some potential, though. It would probably stick out too much on each side and catch crap if it was just like you drew it, but I could probably rotate it 75 or 90 degrees it would barely overhang the back of the tire. I would need to modify the spare tire "handle" to attach the jack and change the angle. Perhaps cut it off, go with slightly larger tube and stick a couple bolts through?

weld some bolts on the dark blue line, use some wing nuts or lock nuts to keep it in place and call it done.

what about on the roof right behind the front seats? just make sure its secure so it doesn't fall down and kick your ass

How about accross the bottom of the front windshield. It should be wide enough, and in a roll it would not get pinned or bent. Might be in the way of opening the hood though.

Dont forget, w/ a few simple mods, you can make a mount for the base plate of the highlift in a seperate location and that will save you a little room.

I am going to order a bunch of those quick fist thingies & see if I can figure out anything innovative with them before going a route that would require welding. Perhaps I can even figure out a way to mount the thing on the roof - inside or outside.

I'm still a fan of the welded on bolt, but I guess that's how my Cruiser got so ugly in the first place.

I'm working it out w/ Will @ Sierra. I am getting a bunch of stuff & he will be in Houston Friday at Shrockworks (sp?) picking up his truck. I figure I'll save the shipping and go down and pick the stuff up from him and check out his rig. Wanna go w/ me?

Not sure yet. I am supposed to talk to Will tonight and set a schedule. Right now the rough timeframe is between 1p and 7p, though obviously not that whole time. I'll keep you posted. Anybody else is welcome to go too...
