Why the hell did you buy spacers? Didn't you hear about coop launching a tire into a house at Clayton?

A couple weeks ago a guy with a huge supercharged v10 excursion on 38"s with wheel spacers came in to the discount tire I've been working at in the woodlands. One of the guys pulled off the front left tire to do a flat repair when I saw the wheel spacer and told him to hold off on it. I told the salesman about it then had to explain to the customer that we could not perform any work on a vehicle equipped with wheel spacers due to liability reasons. The customer ended up parking over at Hooters, borrowed a floorjack and 4 way, then rolled the tire over to us. I repaired it and balanced the huge ***** then rolled it back over to his truck. He was cool about all of it and understood why we couldn't install it. I told him about Coop's accident just for good measure.

is that your company policy?
Wheel spacers are fine if they're not cobbled together shiat and you torque them down properly and retorque them after 100 miles and periodically. Instead you made him torque his with a tire iron in the parking lot...

it would most definately be mine if i owned a tire company or any shop for that matter. maybe he and the families of the dead girl scouts can sue the maker of the tire iron.

Two people in the club have lost a wheel on their rig that I know of due to spacers. That's a pretty high ratio of those that are running them, and I would like to think that we keep up our junk better than some frat boy. I think they're a bad idea.

i have them on the front of the work truck, but they are true wheel spacers. Basically a 1/8 AL shim to move the wheel out. VW guys have used both adapters and spacers for years with no problem. I think they would be dangerous in applications where there is a greater chance for excessive leverage or initial high shock. i would still make it a company policy to not work on them, there is just too much room for error.

i had to put them on the front of the bronco to keep the tires out of the leafs

i researched spacers quite a bit for the jeep. they would have worked perfectly and saved me a lot of work on the wheels. i could have bought a set for less than what i spent on machine work on my centers and saved a lot of time. i found a company that sells steel ones but just didnt ever feel comfortable with the idea. if it was going to be a trail only vehicle, i would have put the steel ones on, but it will see the street and i like my dad and want to keep him around.

the question I asked was whether or not Discount Tire actually has a policy against installing wheel spacers. And if they do, why did the tech and/or salesman not know about it?
