The last few years I've just cut a bunch - like 5 or so - all in Clayton... They work pretty well, just don't tend to last long. I'm thinking about switching to something with stronger sidewalls. It really sucks to leave a sweet trail only because you've already cut two tires...

Stopped by Bill's around noon today to see how the paint was coming. Should be laying the blue down right now. They did a great job on the body work, used flat stock on the upper portion of the body line and solid round stock around the fender lip. They also finished the interior bedsides, used fiberglass to fill in certain areas around the cage. The whole interior of the tub is getting bedlined.

If you haven't caught on this is the same shop that builds the dragsters and who built the first cage as some of you may remember. So now for the things I'm skeptical about but will just have to test out.

As I mentioned earlier I had planned on a y pipe to single muffler setup kept tucked up. Well things changed. Ended up being a dual 2 3/4" to flowmaster 40's exiting under the driver and passenger floorpans. With such a tight frame rail width the exhaust had to be routed under the frame behind the front shackles. That's not an issue however as I'm pretty sure I now have the stoutest behemoth of rocksliders/boatsides/skidplate ever which covers the exhaust and stak.

The pics I'm posting are not the finished product. There are a few other plates still being added that angle upwards to cover the downtubes and help in sliding over rocks. Overall the skidplate will only hang a few inches below the frame rail, most of the whole piece is boatsides. I'm extremely happy with the work they have done as it's always top notch. I'm looking forward to testing it all out. If I run into any issues I can always go back and change it.

Well actually it is still blue and silver, bright blue to be exact. :D Cage, bumpers, grill hoop are silver, body gets the bright blue.

I came up with the idea of this color scheme from the chevelle. I really like the light blue and decided to paint the jeep the same. We're planning on painting the nova in a matching scheme to make our family race team look the part.

Here's a pic I snapped of the paint about to be mixed.

Picked it up this morning and it looks awesome. There are a few spots that need to be touched up but it will get taken care of in the next couple of days when they come out to our shop to mount the skidplate and bedline the inside.

I'll post some pics tonight when I get back to CS, gotta get back to electrical.

CheapJeep

Made progress on the electrical. Dad was still going at it when I had to leave for CS to study.

I really like how the paint turned out. As I mentioned earlier a couple of the guys will be coming out to install the skidplate and make touchups to the paint sometime this week.

I told dad I wanted the chassis/axles painted blue as well. It came out looking great but I'm going to paint certain suspension, axle, and steering parts silver to match the cage and bumpers. The sliders/skidplate are getting painted silver as well. That will help to accent areas and break up the blue undercarriage which seems a little overwhelming on the eyes right now.

The plan is for dad to continue working on electrical and have it done by wednesday. I will get back to thrashing on it after class on tuesday. Hopefully fire it up on thursday.

Pics...

Yeah, new tires would be nice but these have plenty of life left in them for now. Still uncertain on the prerun next weekend, I have some parts coming in from Jegs tomorrow. We shall see...

more from today...

I finally got around to messing with the th350. I had cleaned the case and torque converter up before I installed it. After mounting the shifter, new Greddy dipstick, and a little fluid I found a couple of leaks. I bought a B&M shift kit from Oreilly's the other day and afterwards added a new braided flex dipstick, deep trans pan, etc to my Jegs order which arrived Sat. morning.

Trans pics....

After dropping the pan...nasty.

Tested all of the wiring and components. Only had two mishaps, one being the fuel pump to battery instead of ignition and the other with the rocklights and driving lights with the painless relay. Worked out both issues and it's good to go.

Made more progress today before heading back to CS.

Ran more wires and hooked up alot of the electrical. Dad has done an awesome job, everything looks really clean loomed and dressed. Only a few items left to connect. We did run into a couple of snags but after some trouble shooting all the electrical bugs were worked out. Added B&M trick shift atf to the trans and it's ready to rock.

Temporarily dropped the fuel cell in and added fuel. Fixed a small leak at the inline fuel filter, the back cap wasn't tightened down all the way. Also found that I had the wrong fuel pressure regulator. I accidentally grabbed a reg with 2 outlets instead of 1 outlet and 1 return (they look the same), going to swap it out so no biggie. Had a leak coming from the passenger side water pump port. Pulled it off, resealed it, and no more issues.

After all of that we had spark, fuel, and I manually turned it over to get oil flowing. Cranked it a couple times but nothing. Decided to double check tdc even though I was sure it was correct. Pulled the drivers side valve cover off, bumped it to top dead center on the number 1 cylinder. Popped the cap on the distributor and the rotor was pointed at the number 1 cylinder. Put it all back together and advanced the timing to 13 degrees. Cranked it again and came really close to running several times. After shooting a flame out the passenger side exhaust that almost set my dad ablaze, smelling enough fuel to give me a massive headache, and seeing that it was dark, we decided to call it. Getting it so close to running then having to bail sucked but I still had to pack up and head back for school.

With such a short deadline dad is planning on having Bill and the guy that builds drag car engines come out to get it going in the next couple of days. I imagine that it's something really simple but with a time crunch, being out of town, and finals I have no problem enlisting help and expertise.

Update...

Electrical is pretty much completely finished and working, only thing left is to install the headlights and front turn signals.

As for the engine, it ran after Bill and Ricky shimmed the starter and adjusted the valves, rockers, and lifters. Ran into a problem with the harmonic balancer and flexplate not being correct which they immediately figured out. Bill ordered the correct balancer and flexplate this morning which will arrive tomorrow.

I will be going home tomorrow to work with them getting the new balancer and flexplate installed, should be fun.

Hell Yeah! After a year and 4 months the Barn Burner finally rolled out of the shop under it's own power. I have to give massive thanks to my dad, Bill, Ricky, and Wierd for their knowledge, help, and hard work to get it running in such a short time. Without their help there's no way I could have had it ready to go to Clayton from the stage I had it in.

After getting it back together with the new balancer/flexplate we fired it up and set the timing. Hearing it for the first time was awesome, sound's badass... Afterward's dad worked on the last couple of electrical item's while I set the rear brakes, added more atf, etc. Pulled it out of the shop tonight and ran it for 20min. at 2,000rpm to break in the cam, went well. Found that the notion of "you get what you pay for" applies to headers as well. The black paint/coating burned off. Pretty badass to drive it again even if it was only in and out of the shop.

Going to wait on doing the bedliner until after Clayton. Tomorrow I'll start mounting the seats, fuel cell, harnesses, and other odds/ends...then take it out for a drive.

Ricky and his son in-law have a blue jeep/buggy on rockwell's and said his son in-law is supposed to be taking it to Clayton next weekend too. I'll have to keep an eye out for him.

Here's a pic, smoke is from the header paint.

I had planned on heading home to get the jeep this evening since I had my last final this afternoon. Talked with my dad and decided it would be best to just grab it in the morning due to the weather and awful traffic. Plan is to mount the skidplate, top off fluids, grab tools, etc then head back to CS to load the rest of my stuff and pickup Travis and Tyler. Should be leaving CS around 1-2ish would be my guess.

The Barn Burner is currently drying out in the shop after being trailered back from Baytown through snow.

Last week I picked up a new optima red top to replace the old one that went to Rodney, put the front driveshaft back together, and pulled the jeep off the trailer. With Clayton being its first shakedown run there were some issues as expected but it was still fun getting out and wheeling with the new setup.

The list of broken and malfunctioning parts included...
-Transmission (no second gear)
-Brakes (wouldn't hold in low range)
-Rear Driveshaft
-Rear t-case yoke
-Front driverside hub (lockout knob internals broke)
-Front driveshaft (made contact with the skidplate breaking the grease fitting off)
-Electric fan blades broke
-Fuel return line leaked
-Rear anti-wrap truss ripped off
-Rear springs creased
-Front driverside spring shim

CheapJeep
12-27-2008, 06:13 PM
After unloading it I pulled it in the shop and started pulling some of the broken stuff off. Drove it around to check for any other problem areas. Before the trip I had noticed a small oil leak coming from the backside of the block, mostly from the passenger side. First thought was that it was just the valve cover gasket but after running it after the trip it had worsened a bit. Definitely coming from the intake manifold, only about a quart has been lost. Pulling it off and resealing it has been added to the list.

Already ordered some parts and started to tear into it.

-D70 disk brake conversion kit from DIY, should be in shortly.
-1350 CV flange and pinion brake kit from Stak.
-Rancho rs44148 rear springs
-Warn premium lockouts
-Flexalite mustang fan, picked it up and installed in Clayton. Kicks ass.
-8 AN cap for the fuel cell to block off the return line.
-Dropping the trans. and taking it to Ricky for a rebuild or possibly a whole new built unit.

After I get the trans back and flange/pinion brake kit installed I will get a new rear driveshaft made. Plenty of other stuff I'm working on. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

1310?

Yeah what's left of them. I'm running a 1410 at the axle in the rear and now a 1350 flange at the t-case. Front is still 1350 at the axle and 1310 at the case.

would be hard to convert to power using the wilwood pedal as it uses two masters, making sure the masters are the correct bore is really what is needed

Very true. I looked in to finding a power booster after getting back from Clayton but have yet to come across anything that will work with the Wilwood setup. The master cylinder bores are 7/8. I'm hoping that after I go back and bench bleed them, install the rear disks, and adjust the balance bar it will be better.

tigweld
12-28-2008, 04:15 PM
are the brakes goin the floor or are you pressing really hard and they just don't clamp? If they still feel really spongy and go to the floor after you blead'em real good you may need to try a larger bore in the front. I think the 3/4 bore is good on the rear. also make sure the center washer in the balance bar isn't getting jammed as this can happen if you don't have staggered bores for f\r. even if you get the masters right i don't think the pedal on willwoods set-up is long enough to create the mad pressure need to be able to stop your jeep in low range in gear

Graystroke
12-28-2008, 05:42 PM
I'm betting that a 70 wheel cylinder is big. if you only have a 3/4 bore on the master and say a 3/4/ or 7/8 maybe even 1" or 1 1/8" on the rear or maybe even bigger will that make a difference? I know some people put a gm 1 ton cylinder on the back. I'm guessing you will need a bigger master to make that work. I have know idea what a gm master cyl bore is... maybe a good place to start and compare from.

also double check to make sure your shoes are not too far from the drum and you're not using up all your stroke on the MC before you even make contact w/ the drums

CheapJeep
12-28-2008, 05:50 PM
Right now the pedal travels almost to the floor before locking the brakes up. The firewall is flexing when the pedal is depressed so I'm building a new plate mount for the master cylinders and pedal bracket to keep it from flexing. The steering shaft comes really close to the balance bar and prevented proper rod/plunger adjustment. I will move the whole assembly over a half inch to keep it from binding which should allow me to get it dialed in.

While bleeding the brakes I noticed the left rear was the only one with air coming out of the bleeder valve. I checked the lines for possible leaks coming from the flares but they were ok. When I rebuilt the d70 I replaced the left rear brake cylinder with a different unit close to the o.e. specs. It all worked but I'm assuming that it's the culprit, in hindsight I shouldn't have swapped it out. Really doesn't matter now since I'm doing the disk brake conversion.

I have seen the same wilwood system in rigs on pirate and in Crawl. I noticed that the pedal sweep in the pics are longer than what mine is set at. I can only speculate until I make the changes and see what the outcome is. There's always room for adjustments and it will just take some fine tuning.

CheapJeep
12-28-2008, 05:55 PM

Before the trip I had to pull the shafts and drums off to unstick the drum wheels. After I got it all back together I jacked up the rear axle, used a brake spoon to turn the drum wheels and spun each tire until the drums started to drag.

I'm sticking with a th350 because I already have the stak adapter, shifter, deep trans pan, built a crossmember, etc for one. Haven't decided on the converter and build for the new trans, I'll be talking it over with Ricky who will be doing the work for a final decision. It already has a TCI cooler mounted in front of the radiator, you can see the cooler lines in the first trans pic.

I think it will break again. you need to take the leaf packs apart leaving only the main leaf and cycle the rear suspension. then you might be able to find an arc for the traction bars that might not bind so bad. my bet is you really need to have the bars parallel rather than triangulated and the front mounting point much lower.

Forgot to mention the difference in ride height. With the new leaf's it's currently sitting level, if not a little higher than the front. Once the weight of the trans, t-case, skidplate, etc... are added the springs will settle a bit more.

Thrashed pretty hard today... As usual, doing stuff like this alone sucks but playing metal/rock really loud helps to pass the time and melt faces.

Transmission, T-case, shifters, cooler lines, etc...all installed. I'll get the trans tunnel/cover in, t.c. bolts in, and adjust the brake pedal tomorrow.

Brake pedal/master cylinder mount I made to help keep the firewall from flexing.

It lives once again!

Got it running and driving yesterday before heading back to CS. Front wheel burnouts are fun.

Swapped out the plugs and increased the gap for a tad longer spark. Fired right up and run's great. Made a couple of adjustments to the stak shift linkage which was getting hung up and added a few more quarts of b&m trick shift atf. After bench bleeding the master cylinders, new rear brake lines/fittings, rear disk conversion, extending the m.c. plungers, new pedal/m.c. mount, etc... I was still having issues. With a deadline to make TCC and still having school priorities I loaded it up on the trailer and dad dropped it off at Bill's shop yesterday evening.

They're fixing the issue with the master cylinders, new rear driveshaft, extending the front driveshaft, fixing the oil leak coming from the rear of the intake manifold, and a couple other small details.

Overall I made a huge amount of progress for working solo this weekend but just ran out of time.

I was quoted $750 for a 5.3 a couple years ago before starting over.

Ricky, the guy that built the transmission, mentioned he was interested in my 383 for a hot rod/drag car and gave me a couple leads on finding a gen IV engine. I have been considering it since it wouldn't take many changes to make the swap. I guess the 383 holds a certain sentimental value since I built it myself.

Thanks, props to my dad on the switch layout. I talked to him today and got a status update on the BarnBurner.

The reason I kept having problems with the brake system was because I was running two master cylinders into a proportioning valve, mistake on my part. This caused the m.c.'s to fight each other and back-flow as pressure was applied. The wilwood pedal and master cylinders have been replaced with a badass pro-stock pedal/single master cylinder assembly.

Bill checked the triangulated 2-link anti-wrap setup I designed and found that the geometry was off...as one would guess. :D The truss I built has been retained but an adjustable wishbone setup is now in place. I'm not exactly sure on how it's designed since this was all described by my dad over the phone. I used the fel-pro intake manifold gaskets when I built the 383, the rear valley gasket was leaking. It's being resealed with rtv this time which should remedy the problem.

Time to work on it again...

Ran into an issue with the trans slipping in forward gears late in the day but still had reverse.

Most likely culprit
-Low on ATF (shot the trans dipstick out at some point, added 4 qts to no avail)
-Clogged filter/pickup/valve body
-Forward gear clutch burned up
-Cracked/broken cooler line

Plan is to drop the skidplate and flush the system, change the filter, fluid. If that doesn't work I'll pull the trans and go from there.

So...

After class this morning I decided to head back home to tear into the jeep. With hunting trips the next couple weekends and finals approaching I needed to start now so I can make sure to have it ready for Clayton.

After a valiant attempt to revive the forward gears I admitted defeat...

Options are to either rebuild this one once again or move on and go with a tci

KrazyKarl02
11-17-2009, 08:11 AM
Why do you think this tranny keeps going out. I mean isn't this like your 3rd one? Do you think it is from the power of the 383? A TH350 should be able to hold it's own pretty well.

TMatheaus

CheapJeep
11-18-2009, 12:39 AM
A th350 will hold up with my setup, just needs different internals to handle the power. It's only been rebuilt once and had stock internals put back in. The current cooler is a tci universal but I'm going to swap it out for a better cooler even though I highly doubt its the culprit.

When I drained the pan there was definitely enough atf before adding more on the trail (thanks again Kevin and Coop). Dropped the pan to find metal shavings and black residue. The forward clutch gave out from what I can tell.

It's back together and running once again. Mounted a badass trans cooler/e-fan setup in the bed, should have no problem keeping it cool under rompage. Need to make a mount for the trans temp gauge since there is no room on the dash.

Built a winch mount yesterday using pieces from Coop's old one. Got it installed, just need to wire it up. Also welded on some d-ring mounts to the front for tow points.

Started on a steering box brace using some scrap pieces of chromoly tubing. Not much left, just need to finish it up.

radio shack switches, cheap looking labels, thin metal, and its a switch panel. I don't get it.

look at that tj switch panel he sells and think if you would be ok with something like that on your dash.

I'll take a picture of the custom one he built for my dad's 40 to cover the "radio" slot and post it. Pop's seems happy with it, somethings are worth more to folks who don't have to deal with any problems. I think the value of the panel came in the very clear instructions of how to tie into his winch control which really helped him. I think Ed has one of his big panels too.

Wiring in a dash mount winch controller is not rocket science and I don't think adding some cheesedick "arming" switch completes the package...

That said take the 12voltguy debate somewhere else. Yes, I agree that his stuff looks cheap and having dozens of arming switches mounted on a shiney aluminum panel does not make it cool, it looks like ass.

Got a few upgrades for the Barn Burner.

Still waiting on the PSC power steering pump to arrive. Need to get the front driveshaft rebuilt for a 1350 dual cv flange setup.

Once you buy a disco though, your teeth start rotting out and you get that limey stench that you can never wash off. :flipoff2:

I may be mistaken but I think that kit is like a self-tuning speed density system or maybe better described as a mass air without a MAF sensor?

it is true speed density. self tuning is easily done when you eliminate ignition control and use a wideband on a naturally aspirated engine. Pretty hard to burn holes in pistons or break rings that way, and if it does you can blame it on the springs in the distributor.

It uses the wideband and efi computer to adjust fuel tables on the fly instead of a human interpreting the data while trying to hold on to a laptop while riding in a square tired death trap and helping the driver look out for the man and his radar.

i thought you and cook were going to get shot at when you did this around the block in his truck while it backfired every 2 seconds, i think it was also 3am at the time. :gigem:
