View Full Version : Welder problem

I got me a lincoln pro mig 180 this summer for my shop. Its a litlle one. The problem is that I can't get it to feed .035 wire off of a 2 pound or 10 pound spool. To me it seems like the wire feed motor just doesn't have enough power to spin the 10 pound spool or that it can make the bend at the gun. I've tried taking it to Brazos Valley supply but they haven't been much help. It should be warrantyable but I'm just getting the run around. Does any body have any sugestions?

edit- I attached an image and heres the webpage if it helps.

http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Catalog/equipmentdatasheet.asp?p=42421

Ive only ran 2 pounds of .025 through the machine, and was suprisingly impressed by the performance for the little machine.

did you change the drive wheels and whatever else is supposed to be changed for different wire

I know on my hobart you have to switch the feed wheel around. Mine has two grooves, one for .023/.030 and one for .035

Yes I put on the .035 wheel and the guides say they are good for ..025- .045 wire.

Edit- I took it to brazos and he pluged it in, then said "thats not right it seem like it gets stuck some where" then he got my number and said he would call me later that day. that was last week, i went up there monday and he said he hadn't forgot about me...

I had the same issue with my Hobart 175. It runs .24 fine, but hated .30. I couldn't get it to work with the .30. I finally stepped back down and it worked like a charm. I never found the cause. Could be dirty wire, bad tip, or just not powerful enough. Let me know if you figure it out though.

I think mine just doesn't have enough power, but hell it came with .o35 wire in the box.

They're taunting you. :flipoff2: You might have a kink in the hose liner which usually causes birdsnests (ask me how I know  ) but if your rollers arent powerful enough I could see it not moving the wire at all.

If you have it at the house this weekend I wouldn't mind coming by to look at it.

Some quick things to look at first...

Take the lead off and see if it will feed the wire through the rollers at all.

Make sure there is plenty of tension on the rollers.

hand feed the wire through the lead to see if you have any bad spots/kinks in it.

I'll be around all day sunday if you wouldn't mind taking a look, but I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

With the lead off I can most of the time get the wire to feed through the hose but it never makes it all the way out of the gun. With the slightest push on the wire it will feed all day.

Theres plenty of tension and I haven't seen any kinks.

You should try .030 wire and see if that works, Ihad the same welder and it never was able to keep up with .035. I used .030 and gas on it and it worked really well.

my linlocn 135 will feed the .035 but i doubt that helps your situation

BroncoJo

correct tip and solid but I have also tried to run .035 flux just to see if it would work, it didn't.

are the wheels spinning but not pushing wire? change the tip, ive found that people who dont know how to weld (no offense intended) screw up tips very quickly. to check, take the tip off and try to feed wire.

I allways take the tip off to feed new wire. The wheel does not spin but it spins fine with .025 wire of a 2 lbs spool( came with it) I went and picked up a .023 11 lbs pound spool to see if that will work.

**** man give me a little bit of credit :flipoff2:

i dont take the tip off when i put a new spool on... ive never seen one that the drive wheels wouldnt spin on. they always just spin but slip. sounds like a POS to me.

you may actually have the drive rolls to tight, lossen the dirve wheels up untill they spin on the wire and don't feed it.

See if that helps

send it back and buy a Miller or Hobart

thats the best solution

PS. I have heard really good things about the new Hobart 187

if its not bird nesting then i would say the drag is on the spool, not in the liner or gun. ive never seen one not able to make a sweet bird nest when it gets locked up in the gun.

Thats what I have been thinking and thats what I told brazos supply. I have tried/checked everything on the spool and it doesnt seem to be hung up

regardless, your drive wheels are too tight like creighton said, they should spin.

Man I bought it from a guy in the wallmart parking lot... He bought it from lowes but they wouldn't take it back because the box had some damage, his pos cherokee leaked and barely discolored 1 side of the box. I allready registered it with lincoln to make sure it wasn't stolen. The ***** wasnt even opened. and yes it was a killer deal.

that's BS about taking it back...lowes is like walmart and will take anything back...they will even take back custom ordered windows or .(insert item here).... no box needed. they'll even take back dead plants....and if you used a credit card you don't even need a receipt.

are you trying to say that someone who sells a welder out of the back of a pickup might be less than honest?
