so what is the best setup for an offroad chevy 350. (that being said i know ther are hundreds of opinions I'm just looking to get some ideas)

i already have a good long block with one piece rear main, exact year unknown, and a tbi setup and hopefully soon a serpentine setup. now i'm looking for what to do with the internals

I was thinking:
hot tank block and heads and if good (looks good so far but i haven't got the crank out yet) reuse good pistons and rods and crank
new bearings and rings
use stock heads
rv cam

call it a day.

I'm not grying to make a stroker or do anything huge, just get a reliable moderatly powerfull efficient v8

Scoggin Dickey is an hour from my house, I know a few guys that build the engines for them, I may can help get ya a discount with them. Beer or Liquor is a good start for bribeing me.

is it scoggin or dickey himself? I'm pretty sure they build their own stuff.

pace performance has better prices then scoggins dickey and you dont have to pay tax since outside texas. The shipping is a little more but even so, i saved about $300 buying the red rocket motor from them.

Look around online. I'll try to find the place I got my stuff from but it was cheaper then from S&D also. Also checkout ebay, a few of the online companies I looked at were also selling stuff on there and you could get it for even less.

Check out Eaker Performance. He's local (Bryan) and sometimes is cheaper than the catalogs. 979-775-7223

It's got 3/4 the HP of any equally heavy engine.

Fredo

I think my scout has a 3/4 cam, or maybe a 1/2 cam because it definitely doesn't have/use all of the cam bearings in the block. :)

By the way, I had thought we had a similar discussion to this before. Pages 1 and 2 have some decent info, beyond that it turns into yacking between me and Jospeh about carb vs. fuel injection.

If by chipper you mean that you felt like you had been ran through a wood chipper, then yes, I was feeling quite "chipper" saturday. Did you end up sleeping in your truck or did you make it home?

slept it off for a while. i know i had a beer. then one shot and a beer. then you and me had 3 or 4 and a beer. and some blue drank. its pretty fuzzy beyond that.

went to vilas today to drop off the cam bearings, freeze plugs and pistons so it could get bored and found out my heads are cracked in 5 places. aparently not that uncommon. i have a set from a 86 but the valves on those are really small ( maybe 1/2) the size of the other tbi heads that are cracked. what heads should i look for or should i just use the ones i have with the smaller valves

Graystroke
11-29-2007, 07:38 PM
how much money you have? a set of vortec heads would be cheap and give you a lot of power...have to do some mods to make them work on the intake. or buy some dart sportsman heads (cast iron) and there are some others that are fairly new on the market that Hot Rod just tested I believe last month...I think they were around $400? pair

how much is it going to cost to get them reworked? vales, seats, guides, springs?

it may be cheaper to just buy new world products or summit brand

colman
11-30-2007, 07:39 AM
which ones reworked, i am not sure which ones to use. this is my first chevy motor to build. right now i'm just looking for the best option here in stock or used heads. i read somewhere that the small valves are good for low end torque but i didn't think that made sense. if i were to go with stock what would be the best year to look for? who is the chevy guru around here

sharpe is one, but he is more into the oilburners when it comes to powerplants. Fred and jimmy and grayson and flem have said some things that might lead me to believe they knew about the subject somewhat....

[black edit]sharpe is a self proclaimed one, and will spread his useless knowledge like jerry's sister spreads her... uh, better get on another subject before jerry enlists just to get sent over here to kick my ass.[/black edit]

I don't really feel like going back and reading three pages of ****. Answer these questions and I'll try and give you some advice on what heads to run.

-What is this engine going in?
-What cam are you putting in? (be specific, if you say RV Cam, I swear to God I'll drive to College Station and shoot you in the testicles.)
-What pistons did you buy? (flat tops with relief cuts?)
-Fuel Injected or Carb, and what intake manifold?
-Headers or stock exhaust manifolds?

just got a call from villas, the machine work is done, i will pick it up tomorrow. had them bore it .030, install freeze plugs, cam bearings, hot tank the block and put my new pistons on the old rods. so far
289 for the kit
280 for the machine work (which includes the hot tank for the bad heads)
20 for the tbi intake
15 (in shipping) + a few parts traded for a complete harness, ecm, sensors and rebuilt tbi and 2 fuel pumps
5 for block paint
so for 610 all i need are heads, which i may have i just need to research the casting #'s some more

colman
12-07-2007, 11:24 PM
turns out my bearings for the mains and rods are .010 and i need .001. time to find someone in town that has the same brand and try and trade them or even pay a few bones. i missunderstood the machine shop over the phone so i got the wrong bearings. or if all else fails get new ones and try and sell the ones i have later
