View Full Version : St. John's C-Bone Build

For those of you that don't know, St. John used to actually wheel with this club and not just hang out on the runs and help spot. He had a cherokee, that when he got it, was a clean and unmolested bone stock 95 2-Door 4x4 Cherokee with a 6cyl/5spd. He immediately remedied that problem but slapping an 8" skyjacker lift, regearing it, slapping an ARB front bumper and winch, and throwing lockers in it with a set of 35" tires. It later received a Scout Dana 44 with a spool in the rear, big stereo, custom interior, and a rollcage.

He liked to drive to the trail. Here's a couple of it when we drove it to Las Cruces for spring break.

Further Proof that we didn't have a support vehicle on this trip is how we were packed like we were fleeing Cuba.

But, after breaking things and Ryan's typical, "hey, wouldn't this be cool?" attitude, the cherokee went under the knife.

The first pictures to ever be posted about what he was doing are these. At the time he really didn't want everybody to see what he was doing. I don't know if he thought it was going to turn out bad, or he thought he would eventually scrap the project, but these were the first to surface.

Here's what I have so far. I'll leave the commentary up to Ryan at this point if he wants to add any. I didn't get to finish uploading all the ones I have last night, but I'll get them added tonight. For now, here's some stuff to look at while at work.

It did, but it turned into a gay 3 link vs 4 link argument, so I figured instead of posting in that one we would start over in the actual build-up section. I'll get the rest of the pictures up tonight.

Looks bad-ass. Then again, that's exactly what I was expecting after hearing Jimbo brag on it. You know St, John, you could buy that black Cherokee in the good deals thread and it would be like before and after.

anything ran in jeepspeed needs a jeep or amc engine this is just a playtoy or more of an all around vehicle (street, rocks, dunes, maybe a dragstrip blast or 2)

On the rear panhard, are you using the all-thread to accomodate twist or is that just adjustment, and will get a jamnut?

yup new shop at da house

the rear panhard adjustment is b7 all-thread it would have got a jam nut, i really think I am goin to take it off and put on heims with 5/8 eyes, the bolts for the smaller re joints are tiny I am havin second thoughts about them

the wheelbase is 110.5" at full bump so at ride height maybe 3/4" shorter. at first I wanted it a little longer as I planned on 40's but there just isn't enough room between the door hinges and turn signals in the front to be able to full bump and full lock the steering and keep a very low ride height. the motor is moved back alot. from where the front pulley of the 6 cyl was to where the front of the v8 pulley is now it's about 14" back. only the front 2 cylinders hang out from the firewall.

****ing sweet. Interesting idea using the PSC full hydro ram as both tie rod and hydro-assist. I like that your engine sits pretty far back. Always makes me nervous going down hill with all that weight up front. Lots of cool stuff!

Every pic I see though has less body. I'm sure the guys at 218 wouldn't mind coming out to help you remove that last little bit. :gigem:

Just to clarify, that is the 3-ish car shop. The garage is actually next to it, and when he re-built the house (he bought it partially burned down) they relocated the kitchen in front of the 2 car garage and made it a 4 car garage. (Think really long 2 car garage) He has twice as much garage space than house space. It's the epitome of a car guy house. I'm jealous. :gigem:

On topic: C-bone looks good Ry, it's got the big mota, I bet it'll lay rubba.

I don't think I trust steering to a fluid coupling only, and it will have a much better road feel with a box. I really want to be able to drive this thing on the street quit a bit.

yup the house is kinda odd garage to house ratio wise

2225 sq. ft' shop/garage 3700 total under

I would say about as much as your run of the mill buggy plus the weight of a 1/4 of a cherokee body. If I'm not mistaken, most of it is 1/8" and some Chromoly mixed in, don't think it will weigh as much as you think. Just look at all the speed holes! :gigem:

Yeah, almost all of the brackets are a mix of 1/8" and 3/16". The tubing is 1 3/4" .120 wall, and all the suspension links are chromoly. Shouldn't really be that heavy compared to a trophy truck or the likes. You have to remember, this thing isn't being built to be some lightweight comp buggy that gets unloaded off the trailer, bashed on a comp course, then put back on the trailer for the trip home. This thing is going to be a balls to the wall, sand dunes/desert runner, rockcrawling and trail running, hauling ass down the highway, cyclone spinning, stereo bumping, windows up with the a/c cranked, high flying mushroom cloud laying mother ****er, mother ****er! Or something along those lines.....

Went over and helped Ryan move the Cherokee from the "cinder block side" to the lift. He's added a few tubes here and there and done a ****-ton of welding on the front axle and links. It rolls and has driver's seat somewhat mocked up in it. Sat in it and it's pretty comfy for a guy my size even. Not going to be a lot of foot room, and he better get some insulation from the heat shield of a space shuttle to go next to his right foot, but sitting in it, I could definitely see driving it long distances.

i like it even more now that i see the stance. way low and wide. i also like the major downtravel. now i am anxious to see how the sheetmetal ends up, esp after seeing the time and detail in the frame. i think a quick bath to rinse off the shop dust from the last century would be a good start - :flipoff2:

Well, that's not ride height, that's pretty much full compression. He's not happy with the rear mounts and is talking about redoing the rear mounts to bring it down some. But, Ryan plans on keeping ride height as low as possible.

the secret to posting on pirate is to answer the questions before they have a chance to ask them. state your purpose for your decisions and you wont be second guessed. leave it open for interpretation and the web-wheeling will commence. you'll get way more accolades than negatives. for heaven's sake dont ask a question unless you already know the answer.

no holes in the hood

I'm thinking most of it will be 1/8" platework across(with holes) and tubes diagonally from the center of the next tube forward to the coil-over side of the brace.

the secret to posting on pirate is to answer the questions before they have a chance to ask them. state your purpose for your decisions and you wont be second guessed. leave it open for interpretation and the web-wheeling will commence. you'll get way more accolades than negatives. for heaven's sake dont ask a question unless you already know the answer.

What is the purpose of it? More travel? Less bumpsteer?

agjohn02
09-15-2008, 01:35 PM
Less bumpsteer?

yes. he'll will definately be using that hydro assist though. you generally lose some mechanical advantage but not half.

will you be using a really short pitman arm, ryan? like say half the stock length?

tigweld
09-15-2008, 10:15 PM
yup pretty short pitman maybe like 4" . the panhard bar bracket on the axle end is bolt on so the steering arm and knuckle can come off. the reason for swinger is so I can get the frame end of the panhard lower for less jacking, so the heim on the steering arm end doesn't bind a full droop and also help to get the logest possible panhard(aprox45")

AggieTJ2007
09-16-2008, 08:37 PM
sweet, I see it now. Are you still going to use the double ended ram for the hydro assist.

Also how do you plan on making sure the steering quick enough for high speed stuff. I am running a PSC saginaw box, 1.75" Ram, and a PSC Chevy P-pump on the Jeep. It turn great but is not quick enough for sliding around corners on the dirt

tigweld
09-17-2008, 07:27 AM
it's probably going to be a little slow with the ram I have now, but eventually I will have a ram built maybe a 1 3/4 DE with a 1" or 1.25 rod. I really don't think the spool valve in the saginaw will ever be able to flow enough to make it steer quick.

I really don't like the idea of oil anywhere on my tube or plate work, makes it to hard to weld other pieces on later as it gets everywhere. I also clean all my tubing and plate with thinner so my hands aren't black all the time. spraying wd 40 on everything just makes a mess and makes everything stick to it. scotch brite and pre-cleano= rust gone

that is crazy badazz but I am still stuck on the phantom rear streer. Was this as much as expected or is it just the angle of the picture. What is the % rear steer? I just know that the positive rear steer as shown sucks while wheeling uphill it tends to drive the rear tires the wrong direction and make the situatiuons worse. I prefer a negative rear steer that pushes the rig into a correction while climbing. Just a preference - neutral rear steer is fine also.

Don't get me wrong - it really doesn't matter that much, this whole thing / concept is super bad asz but that noticable rear steer is just bothering me...
Still sweet stuff:gigem::gigem:

tigweld
11-11-2008, 09:28 AM
It has as much as any other 3 link, I am still not overly concerned because it only gets bad on the last few inches of articulation. I wanted 16" shocks for the verticle travel and rear steer came with it, I can deal with that. leaf springs create tons of rear steer I really don't hear people complainin bout them as it's a secondary criteria. I also think my framerail/torquebox rear link attachment setup is way stronger than any setup that mounts both lower links together in the center. with the way the motor is in there the lower links would have to go under the transfercase or be shortened more(only 34" now) to be triagulated anymore so not really worth it. the motor has to come out bottom and the 205 being wide limited rear link placement.

What's the story with the opposing nylock nuts? Is that permanent?

tigweld
02-23-2009, 02:54 PM
the bolt shank is the correct length the one nut on bottom is bigger(aka washer stack) so I dont need tools to take it on and off because all I have is nylock nuts. so no it is not permanent

90 degree brake setups are pretty common, lots of vans had them factory. there are lots of aftermarket bellcrank setups but none with as much ratio as I wanted

With all that additional leverage on the steering, are you going to be able to steer if your engine dies? Also, what do you plan on doing about the steering rate...is the long arm going to make your steering pretty sensitive?

Looking very cool. I can't wait to see this thing on the trail.

tigweld
02-23-2009, 05:16 PM
the really short pitman should help(i can turn it as it sits right now) but I do suspect that if the short link between the pitman and idler arm starts to wear it will have a noticable wander quickly. I have it set up to use the saginaw 4.25 turn box lock to lock. So I would think the steering rate would be relatively close, even though I did remove the knuckle steering stops for a little more angle.

this company stole our idea and is selling the kodiak distributor and vortec crank sensor timing cover as a package to run the gen3 pcm

they do have this, interesting. Is there room on a small block between the water pump and timing cover to run lt1 junk?

tigweld
04-14-2009, 08:19 AM
I don't think that will work on a standard sbc unless you go to a electric water pump there is very little room on as a sbc as they use the timing cover for cam thrust and its almost against the back of the water pump

tigweld

Fredo

as a sbc as they use the timing cover for cam thrust

When did they start doing this?

Ever SBC I've ever torn down isn't this way. The timing chain and distributor gear are the only things that hold a cam on a flat tappet SBC. On a factory roller SBC, there is a cam retention plate that goes on before the timing chain. Now when converting to a roller cam, you would use a cam button that would ride on the cover, is that what you're thinking of?

tigweld
04-14-2009, 08:35 AM
yup I forgot about the retaining plate either way there is still no room

Fredo
04-14-2009, 08:42 AM

robertf03
04-14-2009, 11:09 AM
Don't they cut flat lifter cams at a slight angle to make the lifters spin and thrust the cam to the back of the engine?

I got mine from diyautotune. If you get the preassembled MS2 with the 3.57 board its machine soldered, should take out any reliability problems that homebrew junk could cause.

Fredo
04-14-2009, 11:59 AM
yeah, I think they do Flem. I know the front edge of the block is machined so that the timing gear rides on the block.

He's got all the chassis structure welded back together and has been finishing up the rockers and building a spare tire rack/rear bumper setup. Can the battery hold down bar hit the posts of the battery? Or is it held in there tight enough where it will not move?

Fredo
06-15-2009, 10:27 PM
It'll be held in tight enough where it won't hit the posts, and there is no room for the battery to move in the box, but on top of that, there is that ridge below the terminals in the mold of the battery top that the bar sits against that won't allow it to pop up into the top terminals.

idea for you ryan...on the bedsides, why not weld some kind of bracing w/ studs or post closest to cab attached to fender. run some kind of cam over latch or pins in the rear. This way you just stab in the fender toward the cab firewall and swing it in and latch them up. no tools needed. Kind of like how a lot of radiators are done w/ the bushings and post on the bottom.

tigweld
06-16-2009, 12:06 AM
thats how my radiator is done too. I want something much simpler and cleaner in rear for when the bed sides aren't mounted than a any sort of latch setup I can think of would require. i have yet to finish what I have in mind but it will require a wrench to get the bedside off. even though i think it will be super clean when the bedside is on or off

Graystroke

put the latch(s) on the qtr panel. then all you have is a loop or something that the latch grabs

tigweld
06-16-2009, 07:51 AM
you still would have something sticking out besides the loop for the latch to pull tight against. I looked though the austin hardware catalog for quite a while trying to find something that didn't have anything sticking out when the latch was removed and most of the latches I found(with lock) wouldn't fit in the space available because the lever would get in the way. I think I want all the bedside attachment hardware on the bedside and only a single hole on each bumperette for a bolt.

it's all how you design it. If all the latch is designed to do is hold it in from swinging out it would be fine. small spring clips hold radiators in on millions of cars. they work b/c they are not holding the radiator up...just keeping it from rocking backwards.

If you designed it where it would pull the qtr in and forward it would do the job. And I'm talking about one of the cam type the ones kind of like a chain boomer.

These are of his spare oils tray (oil, atf, power steering fluid)

Next up is the toolbox on the other side:

These are shots of his spare part mounts he built behind the spare tire. No wasted space on this thing. He said he thought about the items that had failed him in the past and decided these were the three he needed to carry spares of: p/s pump, starter, and alternator.

good stuff as usual. im guessing the engine spare parts are in addition to some spare drivetrain parts elsewhere? is it getting dual spare tires? also, getting painted or powdercoated?

cheap paint , one spare, and I think I might put a rear driveline in the passenger bedside. what else do you think i need? i only want stuff that would leave me completly stranded otherwise and/or things i can change easily on the trail.

THis may have already been covered, but what type of wheeling is the Jeep being built for? Crawling? Go-fast? KOH? Jeepspeed? Expo? Trailer queen? Driver? etc etc.

If I remember correctly it is being built to do all of the above except be a trailer queen.

It will be the Ultimate Driving Machine

Ryan, where you at? I know you have the motorcycle carrier attachment? You've been working on your super sick flatbed, but haven't seen that mounted up yet. C'mon sucka!
