Some Krawltex guys made their way out there 2 weeks ago and did some trail clearning. Place is looking sweet.

If I can have my engine running by then, I'll be in.

brakes, we don need no stinking brakes man....

yeah, as long as I have someone in front and behind me I'll be fine :D

BTW, I never realized this, but it looks like this place is less than 30 miles from my grandmothers house, and we go right by her house to get to it. I don't know if this is the quickest way, but I'll most likely go down 290 through Austin until right outside of Harper, then turn south on Reservation Rd until I hit I10. After that its only a couple of miles to the turn for the HWY 41 they talk about in the directions.

Have you heard back from the guy?

yes

camping is primitive but you have access to showers adn restrooms. we
split
into groups based on vehicle ability. Trail leaders are provided.
You can park your trailer where you camp.
I would go through austin on 290 west
try this link. If you put in Harper Tx then Rocksprings Tx. We are 45
miles
closer than Rocksprings but there is no address that Yahoo recogonizes.

Chris there are main "artery" roads all over the ranch that should be no problem for a stock vehicle with decent clearance. It's a hunting ranch most of the time. Camping is in a field, watch for ants and cacti. Being able to take a shower at the bunkhouse is awesome! From houston I think it would be faster to go down to San Antonio then head northwest. Oh and there are definitely trails to wheel stock vehicles as well.

I would just go down I10, but the 4runner is at my parents house, so I have to go by there first, and from there its much easier to just run down 290.

No I decided to leave it out and put a storage area back there instead. If need be, I guess someone can sit on top of the ice chest while we are driving to the trails, but they gotta walk the rest of the time. Oh yeah, don't forget my chevy is only a single cab, so it might be tight with three people inside

good times were had by all. I broke a spider gear (I think). Feller lost his brakes and rolled into David O's rig and some tree's (the second time). David broke his 14 bolt by twisting the center section.

Yeah, I was fighting problems with my brakes all day, and I finally lost them completely late in the day. I rolled backwards into DavidO once, then had the truck stall out and roll back at the top of the trail. There was no one around (luckily), and I had to use a large cedar tree as my brakes. Luckily it held, or it would have been a long way down. I also had to drive out of a roll early saturday morning when I stood the 4runner up on its nose coming off a steep ledge.

I really liked the place. The place is huge, and you can go pretty much anywhere you want. The only rule is don't cut down any oak trees. There are trails for all types of vehicles out there. Another nice thing about the place was the bunkhouses. For $10 a person you can spend the entire weekend in a bunkhouse with beds, electricity, bathrooms with showers and hot water. It sure beat camping in a tent.

redcagepatrol
02-24-2008, 07:23 PM
What his plan get a new one?

I think that he should get a big pipe wrench or a chain wrench, hook it to a his winch, and twist the tube straight - then weld it back up. Fastest, cheapest, easiest method (that's what DavidO is always looking for:flipoff2:)

I don't see a real problem with it, it just means you drive a little further and hit more trails. It also makes it easier to get a broken rig off of the trail and let more people by. I hate when you get stuck on a long trail with a large group of people and some breakage, because it can take most of the day and you don't get to see alot. With a place like this, you can break a larger group up into smaller groups at the bottom of a hill, each taking a trail according to what they're capable of, and then they can all meet back together at the top of the hill and go on to the next set of trails.

Hurry up with the pics :flipoff2:

so I pulled the Patrols rearend apart tonight - it was my welded spider gear that broke, just like last time. Just that it was the passenger side and not the driver side.

I'm going to put a 4cyl carrier in this time because it can be welded up differently and shouldn't mess with the heat treating of the spider gears as much. This will kind of be an experiment:rolleyes:

is it the welded area that is failing or the gear?

I support this experiment, if you can make a 4 cyl 3rd last then I'll be tempted to do the rovota conversion.

its the gear that is failing in the Heat Efected Zone. The gear has the teeth on the outer portion of it then goes inside the carrier with the splines. It splits at the necked down portion where the gear necks down to the splines
