Ok gotcha now I see where you are going. No she drives it around town on a weekly basis, hell she has been driving it to and from work this week. She drives it out to the cars and coffee show I know also. I think her and pop's thinking is trailering it to and from the hill country to drive some windy roads and trailering it to Colorado to drive some passes while the wife and I are out running the trails in our vehicles.

At least this is the impression I am getting. In may we are taking a little family weekend trip to San Antonio to drive the "Three sisters" (?) roads. She will be trailering the maser with my cousins motorcycles in the front and Amanda and I are taking the mustang. Supposed to be fun, I have never done any on road twisty turn touring road stuff but they all have and convinced us to join them. I think this type of trip was the reason for the trailer, more so then the car shows she said she wanted to use it for.

I have been looking around for a place to store my trailer. I can't keep it in my neighborhood much longer without a fine. So far the cheapest storage I have found in San Antonio close to the house is $40 a month. This seems high to me. I am hoping to spend $25 or so a month. Anyone know of a place around here of have family with land that wouldn't mine it out there?

$40 seems about right honestly. For example this is the cheapest place I found for uncovered trailer storage between my house and my work up here and it is $40 http://www.parkerrvstorage.com/. Might be one of those things you just kind of bite the bullet and pony up the extra $10 a month. I know that is $120 a year but having access to the trailer whenever you want, close and convenient to your house, without having to drive a ways to get it might be worth it?

On a side note I pay $80 for a covered storage spot with electricity for the fire truck and smoker trailer. It ain't cheap but the only place I have to store it is my parents place (uncovered) and it is a 1.5 hr drive from me and with how often I use the firetruck it is worth it to not have to spend all night just getting the thing to take it to CS. Just my .02.

I agree that $40 isn't bad seeing what some other places charge. It is only 7 miles too but I would drive 30 to get it down to $25

makes me glad to have some space.

Put a new floor on my trailer last weekend. The floor looked ok, but most of the boards had cracks. Water had been collecting in the cracks and caused the boards to rot from the inside out.

CDR's pawpaw wanted to help with the project, so I stripped the old floor and we brought it out to San Antonio.

Ended up going with regular #2 pine for the new floor. I looked into other species popular with trailer builders such as white oak and apitong. I couldn't find any white oak that wasn't big money furniture grade. Apitong is used pretty often on big rig trailers and supposed to be really durable. It was still pretty pricey at $4+ a board foot. At that cost I'd have to replace the #2 pine almost 8 times before I met the price of apitong. With proper water treatment the wood should keep plenty of years.

I wanted to add anchor points in similar positions as most steel deck car haulers. What I came up with is to span two crossmembers front and rear with channel steel. I used C6x10.5. The 6" width worked well with the floor layout. I was able to space things out so all full length boards were 2x8 and where the anchor channels were would use 2x6. The 10.5# weight gives the channel a little over a 1/4" web for strength. The legs of the channel are just over 2" tall, so I had to notch them to 1.5" where they rest on the crossmembers to make the top even with the deck. I'll pick up some recessed d-rings typically used on car haulers and weld them to the channels this week. http://www.macscustomtiedowns.com/product/48/DRings

Christy's pawpaw putting the final screws in the dovetail. I used floor screws the same as I had pulled out of the old floor. The screws have a T30 torx socket head, and the thread is self tapping.

I dig it. Mine is going to need a new deck in the next year or two. How much did it set you back?

Probably about $250-$300 when it's all done.

Finally got around to finishing up the new deck with installing the d-rings and doing the water sealer. If I ever do something like this again I'm gonna make sure I weld the d-rings on first...it was a pain protecting the wood from burning during cutting/welding. :D

Bias versus radial on a trailer tire? I am getting new tires for mine and need to decide what to get. My stepdad swears that he has better luck with bias tires on his trailers but I wanted yall's thoughts

Bias, they don't blow up. Put size 7.00-15 on it.

For sale on the side of 21. 6 lug axles. Looks like a wood deck with metal over it? no dovetail, probably 18'. I would say it was a $2500 trailer new. Don't know what they are asking.

At that price it will go very quick, Pirate may be your best bet since it is set up perfect for a rig hauler.

Car-hauler type gooseneck? That's what I'd go with if I bought a new trailer

tiger trailers in mt pleasant makes a 26ft gn with 7k axles and drive over fenders like mine. one of the profs in my old dept at a&m bought one while i was there. paid 4k.

If i were you I would look at PJ trailers, they make a "C8" Carhauler goosneck that come in lengths from 20-34', has dual 7,000 pound axles, 8" channed and is 2,000 pounds lighter than the one I bought. saw one in person and they are perfect for one fullsize and a couple 4 wheelers, or side by sides.

Ideally I want to be able to use this trailer for more than just hauling rigs, hopefully to move some equipment one day. Nothing stupid heavy. I only want 2, 7k or 8k axles.

Deckover just puts the rigs up so high and the only real advantage I can think of is if you are loading items on the trailer with a forklift, obviously a deckover is better since you do not have to worry about the fenders. Unless the design of a deckover is inherintly stronger? O, and beer pong, deckover definetely better for beer pong

A lowboy, extrawide like Cooks, in the 30-34' range seems about right.

Would want slide in ramps versus the fold up too.

What about a GN hitch that won't drop my exhaust to the ground or cost a small fortune?

looks like you may be to drop the exhaust but I bet you could clearance it with a hammer or get an exhaust shop to add a bend to clear the hitch.

PJ makes good trailers, My dad has a tandem dual 32' deck over with a 4' dovetail, and it is a beast. He says it is the best trailer he has ever owned. Plus they are made right outside of Paris :gigem:

I should have listened when I bought mine. Mine is 25+5 foot dovetail, perfect for two tigs. The ideal length like Sam mentioned is 32' for 2 7000 axles, anything longer and you need tripples, and all i have heard about people with triples is terrible things related to tire problems

You had mentioned the idea of bobcat down the road, still a perfect size for that and plenty of room for attachments up front.



BTW, aftermarket exhaust does not require a drop bracket like the factory setup when using a B&W. :D

I have a matching PJ with duals 24,000 pound rated, its my new sprayer trailer with a 2,000 gallon tank on it. This weekend it had roughly 8,000 pounds on the trailer, people haul bobcats all day with singles and bobcats weigh 10,000.

I was going for a more lightweight heavy duty trailer that i could still pull at 80mph.

We put as much weight as that trailer will ever probably see. I felt the tires when we stopped they weren't hot and they aren't wearing funny. Tandems cost twice as much when it comes time to buy tires.

If the trailer you have now works fine just keep it. Gooseneck takes up a bunch of space in the bed and doesn't clear corners as well.

Deckover gooseneck is usually stronger than lowboy. Most deckovers are made for tandem duals even when they come with singles. You lose quite a bit of carrying capacity due to the unnecessary extra weight. I have done a lot of hauling a bobcat plus a couple thousand pounds of pipe and a pallet of concrete on a lowboy, never hurt it.

I have never had any problems related to triples. Triples make a smoother ride than tandem duals. I have heard that other people will take your triple axle trailer, load it down, spin it and bend the axles. I never spin any trailer loaded.

I assume when you are hauling equipment you will be running your own business. When you have your own business you get to save at least 30% of the cost of the trailer due to tax write off. Wait until then to buy one.

Thats not a 37', looks more like a 27' (he must be counting the neck). Get you one like this, but get 3 axles. With a trailer that long, and if you plan on hauling equipment, you will be supprised how often you will end up overloading 2 axles. The biggest advantage to a deckover, is the wider deck.

I am sure the answer is in this thread somewhere, but is Schubrings trailer 32' (27' +5')?

Something tells me 30', just can't remember from the Colorado trip.
