well when you drive on paved roads.... it's kind've hard to break:flipoff2:
Yeah I didn't get to wheel any hard trails nor with any TAMOR guys, all good though. I had to run to Kerrville early saturday morning to buy a few things for the dinner. Ended up wheeling alone for a bit looking for people then came across Bob's group. Still had fun wheeling with a great group of new people.
Robbie - random, but when you change from those tires, I think krawlers would look pimp on your jeep.
krawlers look pimp on just about anything
Got it inspected last week. Pretty fun driving it around town, runs great. Moved the rear license plate to the bumper and added a plate light. Also cut a piece of lexan and made a nice mount for the registration/inspection stickers.
Picked up a Warn M8000 from 4wheelparts yesterday, got a good deal on it. Working on designing/building a nice winch mount.
I have a new M8000 in the garage also - to replace the one on the Patrol that is over 10 years old and gets used every trip.
Paid $489 for it from 4-wheel parts (Truck show in Dallas):gigem:
hey scott if the one on the patrol you are taking off is still working alright pm a price i need a trailer winch
Sweet deal! I ended up paying $564 which still isn't too shabby.
Why can't I send you a PM?
Time to work on it again...
Ran into an issue with the trans slipping in forward gears late in the day but still had reverse.
Most likely culprit
-Low on ATF (shot the trans dipstick out at some point, added 4 qts to no avail)
-Clogged filter/pickup/valve body
-Forward gear clutch burned up
-Cracked/broken cooler line
Plan is to drop the skidplate and flush the system, change the filter, fluid. If that doesn't work I'll pull the trans and go from there.
So...
After class this morning I decided to head back home to tear into the jeep. With hunting trips the next couple weekends and finals approaching I needed to start now so I can make sure to have it ready for Clayton.
After a valiant attempt to revive the forward gears I admitted defeat...
Options are to either rebuild this one once again or move on and go with a tci
Why do you think this tranny keeps going out. I mean isn't this like your 3rd one? Do you think it is from the power of the 383? A TH350 should be able to hold it's own pretty well.
probably from the motor, i had a buddy in hs who had a 383 and a th350, he kept burning up transmissions about every 4 months
Could it possibly be that you are using the wrong converter to help with handling the power?
I have seen th350's last behind much more powerful engines than that 383. it needs a better tranny cooler, heat kills auto's.
who rebuilt this last one?
hire HP to install a manual for you.
honestly? what is going on, is it grenading, burning up, or...
David Oliver went through a bunch of 700r4s before he figured out how to hook up his t/c lockup switch...th350 got one of those?
A th350 will hold up with my setup, just needs different internals to handle the power. It's only been rebuilt once and had stock internals put back in. The current cooler is a tci universal but I'm going to swap it out for a better cooler even though I highly doubt its the culprit.
When I drained the pan there was definitely enough atf before adding more on the trail (thanks again Kevin and Coop). Dropped the pan to find metal shavings and black residue. The forward clutch gave out from what I can tell.
For Clayton...
-Drop the trans and take it to be rebuilt
-Reinstall trans, tcase, skidplate, etc...
-install new trans cooler, lines, and temp gauge
-mount winch
Get a cooler with a small electric fan mounted it, like what coop just sold. Then you know that the tranny is staying cool enough.
those small stacked plate coolers suck if thats thats what you are running. find a tube/fin type cooler they are much more efficient(but more expensive). when you are crawlin' you need to pull down into 1st and not use the automatic gear selection if you don't already.
If you are going to have it apart, MRVB?
I am talking radiator style with end tanks 2 pass maybe like this

I can tell you for a fact from personal experiance that the stacked plate do not work very well
I misunderstood, I thought you were talking about something like this

It's back together and running once again. Mounted a badass trans cooler/e-fan setup in the bed, should have no problem keeping it cool under rompage. Need to make a mount for the trans temp gauge since there is no room on the dash.
Built a winch mount yesterday using pieces from Coop's old one. Got it installed, just need to wire it up. Also welded on some d-ring mounts to the front for tow points.
Started on a steering box brace using some scrap pieces of chromoly tubing. Not much left, just need to finish it up.
I'll post pics later, headed back out to the shop.
Ready to rock n roll... Got it all finished up tonight, I forgot how much fun it is to mount the skidplate by yourself.
Pics...
For the winch mount brackets I welded two 3/8" grade 9 bolts from underneath for the studs. Also tapped single 7/16" grade 9 bolts on each side offset for additional strength against shearing.

Steering box brace... Mounted the winch controller box flush underneath due to lack of mounting space on the actual winch. Might move it down the road...

that may be the worst placement for a winch controller box that I have ever seen :)
Ya, with no mounting space on the bumper/winch and the short cable run to the terminals made my options slim. It's still easily accessible and protected by the bumper, steering box brace, etc.
That being said I plan on mounting it inside the console I'm building for the c.b. and head unit later on.
why not just put it on top of the winch motor with some very large hose clamps?
Read above... No space to mount the box on the m8000 motor, I tried it as that's how our m12000 box is mounted. The 3 motor cables have to be lengthened to mount it any further than about 10"s from the winch terminals.
i dont understand your logic, you could mount it under the winch, but you could not mount it to the motor where the wires would need to be ever shorter? maybe its just been a long week, but that doesnt make sense to me
Whacha gonna do when the front end is burried into a dirt bank or something and you need a winch pull to get up it?
