Yeah, rack & pinion in 04+ only.
Here is my .02. What kind of extreme trails are you going to be doing? You do not need solid axles and 40s to have fun. I'm sure you know this. I would imagine that an FJC with IFS and 35s and a locker could do a majority of the trails in TX. If you are goin to SAS this thing and go big, it WILL be less drivable and the capabilites of it will put you on trails that WILL destroy the body. Have you seen my Bronco? Did you see it before the SAS and 36s? If you want to build it just to do it and be one of the first, then hell yeah, do it.
I love having my F150 to travel to places like CO and hit the trails there. I can drive 75 on the highway, drive Imogene pass at 5mph for 4 hours, hit hte highway again and take off without worrying about a thing. I wheel the dog**** out of the Bronco and though it is relatively reliable for an offroad-only rig, I certainly cannot do much else with it.
I guess what I am saying is that building a rig that can do it all offroad and still be a caddy onroad is probabaly on of the hardest rigs to build.
I think you should keep the FJC as a travel anywhere/camping light wheeling rig. Restore the FJ and sell it one day to some rich old man for way more than it is worth. Buy and build something different(not a beater). Not the typical Yota truck, but like a FJ 60/80? Or **** it all and keep wheeling the FJC as it is.
Just my .02
okay, I've been trying to stay out of this, because its your choice and it will be one you have to live with. But the more you talk about 40 inch tires, diamond axles, and other shop built stuff, the more crazy I think this plan is.
So lets look at a little timeline. You pay a shop to build your rig, taking months, maybe years to complete. You wheel it. Parts break, the body gets shredded. Slowly you work your way up to harder and harder trails, and more and more sheetmetal dies. All the glass comes out, the roof, doors, and any extra sheetmetal and interior comes off in a quest to make things lighter. More and more tube is added to replace the mangled sheetmetal you are removing. Finally, the rig is coming apart faster than you can make repairs, or simply looks like ass. You then decide its time to build a buggy (believe me, you'll get to that point). So once again you give a bunch of money to a shop to change the FJ to a buggy.
So why not just skip this and go straight for the good stuff? If you have that kind of money to throw into a project like this, sell the FJ, and have someone like sunray build you a badass buggy with all the bells and whistles on it, and throw a FJ front clip on it like that rig from japan. Or buy a allready built and tested rig for a fraction of the price, change it up to suit you, and be wheeling in no time. I've owned both well built full bodied rigs and a buggy that shocked me with its capabilities every time I went out. If I had the money, there would be no question on what I would do. Buggy all the way, with all the goodies.
one other thing to think about is the spectator effect. If you dump buttloads of money and build this big bad FJ, no one is going to let you go easy on it. You will be forced to abuse it, most likely alot more than you want, because you have the crowds there cheering or heckling you.
Ok guys just to set the record straight I am not set in stone on anything, including this whole build up. I think it would be an awesome build up, and yes just like every project it has its disadvantages but I am more the guy to do the right thing the first time and I am just trying to get my bearings on ALL my options before I make the decision.
man, chris i know how you feel. everytime i tell people about my idea to cut off my hands and replace them with egg beaters, everybody be all hatin' up on me. i just want to do something no one else has done before, you know, something unique. why cant everybody just be supportive of my idea whether they like it or not?
:laughing: cox made a good funny
For the record I told you egg beaters for hands was a good idea! Think of how much time it would save in mixing drinks....Quote:
