I drive it year round.
If you've got the available coin don't skimp out and just replace it all with new components.
WWJLD?
(Not really...Jay Leno would stick a C5 suspension and drivetrain under it. And probably A/C too.)
Spend the money. Get all new, modern shiat and you won't have to do it again.
This thing is way too cool to skimp out and go the cheap route on parts, just my .02
keep the r12 just about every 134a conversion I have been in doesn't blow even close to as cold as it did before. what is so funky about the expansion valve that it can't be retrofitted? I know a badass car a/c only shop in rowlett, they have helped me multiple times when others are stumped. I can get u the number if you need
i have a source for some r12 replacement, been using it for years in my other truck, works great, and pretty cheap compared to r12, if you want i can grab a few cans this weekend possibly
I say go w/ good parts. I would hate to have a cool cruiser/hot rod like that and not want to drive it during the summer months because your boys will be sweatin too much.
R schmahr. fill er with propane!
tommy, i bet your thinking of freeze 12
I have a source for R12 (my dad has about 60 cans of the stuff) and the Freeze 12 or Freeze On replacements that I have tried have not worked so great. I had some in my Chevelle at one point.
That being said these year vettes are known for having less than adequate a/c even with R12, so if I was to recharge I would still have to change the VIR (expansion crap magic valve), add a better blower, install a condensor fan, and I would still be cruising around with an old condensor and evaporator.
I am leaning towards the complete replacement, but that is a lot of cash.
spend the money now and be happy VS having to fix it multiple times and be pissed off and hot

derived from propane. more better than 134
put a vintage air or hot rod air kit in it and be done with it.
I'd either A) put factory crap back on it, that way if it sucks you can blame it on GM and not from being cheap... or B) do nothing.
I've always gone with B.
