eckert has a 70 for sale
there is a d-70u at awesome auto salvage on jefferson in dallas.
tax refund is on its way...should be just enough to cover the rest, maybe i'll get this thing strung together sooner than i thought...
I went to Awesome Auto and found one in a `00 Dodge w/ no bed, but the Dodge versions have 32 spline 1.41" shafts while the Ford versions have 35 spline 1.5" shafts...Detroit for the 32 spline version is also $200 more. This one came from an `85 F350 SRW at Pick-N-Pull in Fort Worth. They wanted $75 @ awesome even tho the sign out front still says "29.99 All rearends"...this one was on sale for $132 out the door, and they even threw in the wheels and tires

its open and according to the BOM its got 3.54s...5.13s and probably Detroit will come shortly
here's Nix's setup that I'm probably going to use to start off with...I figure that putting the hydro assist down low on the tie rod will help take a lot of stress off the vertical link. He said he's had his this way for 2+yrs w/o issue...any thoughts?

one immediate problem I see might be backspacing on the H2 wheels...might not be able to do it this way b.c. of that...hmmm....
I wouldn't put my daughter in that vehicle, you on the other hand have proven that you're collision/rollover/whatever safe! Knowing it's mostly a trail rig, I would use it for now, worst case it breaks on the trail at 2 mph and everyone says I told you so and you get a pic flipping it off and you get to badmouth Nix. :gigem:
i still havent worked out the logistics of taking a g/f and a daughter wheeling so until then, its just the g/f...i'm ok w/ risking her safeliness along with mine
maybe by the time i figure out where to put both of them i'll have had a better epiphany about how to do the steering right...full hydro?
I got sweet new euro tail lights in the mail yesterday to replace the ones that someone was nice enough to smash in for me. cheapest ones I could find
Tail lights
also got the 5.13s for the D70 in the mail yesterday
ordered two D60/Toyota flanges from High Angle...the one that I bought from a guy on Pirate I found out is actually for a Toyota mini diff...even tho i bought it last July, he said he'd send me my $$ back because he ordered his from High Angle as well and will take it up w/ Jesse if he can find his purchase info.
still debating about steering...not sold on nixxer's setup and Busa is determined to make me use full hydro...I talked to Lance and he said he could get it to me fairly reasonable. I'm going to take the knuckles to a machine shop and see how much it'll cost to make D44 arms fit...will probably use arms from Sky that are 3/4" taller but still allow the use of standard length studs.
I've gotten both axles completely torn down and ready to go to the gear installer...just gotta order the detroits.
Question
do i need to keep the center of the dust shields between the knuckle and spindle for spacing?
Front and rear bumpers, along with the receiver hitch, are all in the scrap pile in the back yard. Had to get a new red top this past weekend, mine had a bad cell...after a week on a trickle charger only got up to 10V. I was able to get some pro-ration out of it and it only cost a little over $100.
Both axles are torn down to just housings. I cut the perches and factory shock mounts off the 70. Also cut off whatever that stupid thing is on the bottom passenger side of a 60 front that make you have to use upside down u-bolts. Grinding done and primed, they're ready to go to have gears installed.
I got new brake shoes for the back and got the drums turned for free. Got new calipers for the front and just cleaned up the brake pads cuz they have plenty of meat left on 'em. Also got the rotors turned for FREE. I got new ball joints pressed into the knuckles today.
I modified the corner lenses last weekend to accept a two filament bulb so that I have both parking lights and turn signals up front to keep it inspection worthy.
I got more than what I paid back from the guy who sent me the wrong flange, and had two new ones from High Angle show up today. That led me to find out that the flange fits on the D70 pinion, but not on the pinion for the gears I got when I bought the 60. I dont think the guy i bought 'em from paid any attention, and I guess I didnt either because he gave me 5.13s for the 10.25" that was also in his truck. All I looked for was that they were indeed new gears, had matching numbers, and said 5.13...didnt notice 'til i was actually looking for it that the ring gear also says 10.25
I got in touch with him today and he said that the correct gears have still not moved since I picked up the 60 back in July...going to meet him some time in the next week to swap 'em out.
btw, in trying to track him down i found this...it's whats become of the truck my 60 came out of...
Rockwells & 52"s

anyway...will order detroits next week and get the axles to have gears installed as soon as they show up.
Both Busa and I talked to Lance @ PSC and he is of the opinion that milling and drilling knuckles would be a bad idea, as he saw quite a few ppl who had done it break knuckles out at KOH. I am probably going to go w/ full hydro using a single ended ram, and will more than likely get the p/s pump kit from PSC as my pump is about to crap anyway. He thinks its the best compromise between my budget, capabilities, and ease of installation.
After reading about Katemcy closing i MUST make it there at least one more time, going to shoot for Memorial Day, and leave the last weekend as a backup.
On a side note, the H2s and 37"s ended up on the Dodge last nite so it would pass inspection...one of my tires was roasted bald by my g/f in a drunken adventure driving home from the bar...i didnt know she was drunk. only rub the back of the fender a little while turning, but i'm gonna take it easy just in case 'til I can find something else. pics later.
what size tires do you have on the dodge. i have some 315's r17
Factory 265/70/17 Michelin ATXs...i'd be interested in the 315s but probably not at this point just because all $$ is going into the yota to get it done by Memorial Day. I'll probably try to find one of the same tires used for now and upgrade when the other 3 die.
if i do, you'll see it here
I think we are going to start on this this weekend. If anyone is up north Dallas, Denton area can come by and check it out.
Austin called and said the IFS will be hacked off this weekend as Busa said and that it will be put back together two weekends later. He is still missing some parts so hopefully he can get them before then. I am gonna try to make it for the build weekend if I can pull it.
Well it may be almost complete on the second weekend. I will do some work on it during the week. So should not have much to finish up the weekend of which will be good. The worst part is getting the IFS out and the frame cleaned up. The rest is easy.
well if we get it done early enough we can wheel it that 3rd weekend... I will bring my jeep with me if I can make it just in case
If he gets all his part maybe. I dont know where we would go but i might be able to work a place out.
on the nix set up....what good is the adjustable heim on the tie rod? you can't adjust it for toe in or toe out. that thing would be a ***** to align.
nix is dumb... that is one crazy setup... anyone want to go repo my axles for me?
looks to me like it was a standard bottom rod with adjustables on either end. the drag link attached to the tie rod. when he went with the new axles, decided he had to move the drag link above the axle and the easiest way to do so was buy adding the triangle thing...
this is all a guess, but it seems there are remanence from where something used to mount to the right of the tire on the tie rod...

Get the knuckle in post 240 or cut C's and do it big like Cook's
That steering on Nix's looks way jankee. Where is Nix these days?
The steering is not going to be a problem. That is going to be the easiest part i think.
adjustable heim on one side is useless. You can only adjust the one side and then you ave to disconnect the heim. adjust it, put it back on, tighten everything and then check. other side can't move. kinda dumb, especially if you hit something, bend the tie rod and have to crank it out to fix the toe.
ok I got off work Friday 17th, Saturday 18th, Sunday 19th. So I am down now
Here is a the start on Austins toyota.
Well we got all the crap cut out from under Austin's Yota last night.

Good stuff - looks like that pushed your Jeep outside...

i got different front springs from Rodney, Trail Gear 4" springs

still to go:
replace rear springs - changing to Trail Gear rears as well, it doesn't sit level w/ the Chevy springs in the rear
