assuming it doesn't kneck up after the splines. never cut a stub. it has a machined lip at the end a c-clip goes. as long as it is a ford stub i believe it is the same. is it the same size as your old stub
I'm still confused as to why your shaft is consistently an inch shorter. I would suggest a visual inspection before cutting.
visual inspection of my shaft or my carrier?
I had the carrier out at the dexter house 3 weeks ago but i didn't really look inside the carrier.
when i measured my broken long side it measured about 34"from the tip to the center of the u-joint cap. That's what this site says it should be
http://77cj.littlekeylime.com/images...hafts_Ford.gif
Notice how the earlier model trucks shafts were about an inch longer. Thats what i think this new shaft is
why not find the correct shaft... sounds like a better plan to me
What ever you do, make sure that the center of the u-joint is going through the center of the kingpins/balljoints. If it is out of line, it is going to bind up when you turn and cause problems.
the stub shaft is the correct length, so if i cut the inner to the correct length then the u-joint should be in the center.
dude really if this is being trhat much of a pain in the ass to get the right shaft, suck it up and get a custom one made. I think i can speak for everyone else here in saying something is off about what was in there if everything that you are ordering is wrong.
where are you getting the earlier ones are a different length? 76-79 are identical minus the radius arm castings.
measure your **** and compare it to this and see who is wrong:

I'm pretty sure he knows about this. . . http://www.tamor.org/forums/showpost...postcount=1148. . . already:flipoff2:
I didn't order them from a site. I got them from a guy who said that he thinks that they were from a 79 bronco. i can order the parts online but i don't want to spend the money.
This is an EXPENSIVE hobby, get used to spending a little extra money, esspecially on something like an axle shaft! Being a joo about it isnt the way to go unless you know what you are doing.
why not finding out if the shafts you got from the guy who 'thinks' the shafts are from a 79 is or is not actually from a 79? What is the length of the shaft supposed to be? What is the length of the shaft you got from the guy? What is the length of the shaft that you broke that was in the bronco?
He just needs to suck it up and order the correct shaft all ready!
look, i'll even help.
long side inner of a 79 is supposed to be 33.91"
short side inner of a 79 is supposed to be 14.78"
stub shaft of a 79 is supposed to be 9.72"
Now, what is the length of the two (new one from fsb and old broken one) that you have at hand?
the shaft i pulled out of the bronco is about 34". Dr. N says that it should be 33 29/32". So that is right for my bronco. The shaft that i got is about 7/8" too long so it is about 34 7/8" which would match up to a
78-79 f-250 or 150 supercab truck
69-77 f-250
I don't think that my axle is messed up i just think he pulled the shaft out of one of these trucks.
FINE! i'll just order the right forking shaft off jbg.
Is there a better/cheaper place to buy them?
To answer your original question, yes you can chop off PART of the splined portion. Is this the right way to do it, NO. You are reducing the spline engagement which potentially could fubar the carrier and twist the splines. Also, if you did chop the shaft you can not do things like say the shaft is "about 34"" you have to be precise and subtract the exact amount to the hundredths place on the end of the shaft.
buy them
here: http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/c-404
or here: http://completeoffroad.com/c-62668-a...ng-inners.html
it looks like chromo and stock are pretty similarly priced.
PS: for the application of your mystery d-44 shaft I found 34.75" : 75-79 f-250
Make Clayton an offer on some of his shafts and axles worst he can say is no.
i tried.......he wants to sell both sides together for like $250
Ah ok
used shafts for this thing used to be easy to find in the free--$50 range back in the day... I got two complete 78 models axles from a guy that just needed them hauled off back in 02
Check with Houston Drivetrain Service.....
I've done a ton of business with them building custom driveshafts and ordering "hard to find" axle shafts, great service and products. I used to have a dodge d44 and had trouble sourcing shafts so I went to them, I think I paid $120ish for a complete inner and outer side. That was back in 05 or 06 though....
If you bought both sides it might not be a bad deal, you would have extras then...i agree you need to find the right part.
Mods, could/should all this axle talk be moved to his build thread?
i bought a new shaft today from broncograveyard. cost me $115:mad:
glad to hear
Why mad? That doesn't seem bad.
because if i could find them used it would have been alot cheaper. This weekend i am going to try out some u-pull yards around here.
Where would they have 79 broncos and trucks?
The 70 4wd fords are getting harder to find in the yards. There are always lots of 2wds but very few 4x4.
That sucks. The yard we had in colorado would always have a 79 bronco in it. There were three there in the one year i had my bronco.
