Dodge's 4wd stopped functioning back in May 2015. It would just grind when put into gear. Well just last week I was driving back from Waco and it decided to sound like a maraca the whole drive. I pulled the case Friday and opened it up. Well the shift fork had come apart which explains why it only grinded when trying to put in 4wd. I guess pieces floating around for the good part of a year finally did some damage. Leaving Waco it decided to blow out most of the fluid out of the case. It was pretty empty when I got it torn apart. All of the oil remaining was more suspended metal shavings than oil. The magnet was completely covered. The case has a screen with a tube that flows oil from the bottom of the case to the top. This was packed full of shavings. There isn't any one big thing that looks like major carnage. Just light wear throughout the entire case in every single gear. Guess I should have pulled it the day it stopped going into gear. It is a NP 273D case. I think I am just going to go with a remand one. They are about the same price as one from a junkyard with just as many miles as mine. When I pulled the case I also learned that the front CV driveshaft needs rebuilt and front pinion leaks. Also the rear driveline needs a new carrier bearing. 180K on the truck and I haven't done these things to it yet so I guess it is just time.
I just bought a rebuilt NP263HD from these guys, http://highgeartransmission.com/, for my duramax. It was the best price I could find and it was delivered in less than a week. I found them on Ebay.
Thanks, I never use ebay anymore. There are lots of companies out there that are about 500$ less than I have been quoted.
Transfercase came in. Drive shafts are being rebuilt. Picked up a Pinion seal. Time to start putting it back together. I had to replace the slip yoke on the rear driveline also. It was scorn up pretty good at the seal edge and my driveshaft guy said it would leak very quickly if I didn't replace it. The ujoints in the rear driveshaft are beef. 1480. Didn't realize they were that large.
OK so my 4x4 stopped working on my 7.3l. When I turn the switch nothing happens at all no lights no grinding noise no vacuum no nothing. It did however throw a code and the description is "4WD Mode Select Switch Circuit Fault". Is that the actual switch on the dash or something else?
Ya I checked all the fuses and relays and they all look good. I was thinking about changing to the manual shift one but its a whole new transfer case.
The 4x4 light does not come on on the dash or the switch. I have yet to mess around with a multimeter to track the problem further as I am in Oklahoma away from my truck for work for a few more weeks.
What's the number for the code it threw? I'm betting it's a bad tcase motor, that seems to be the most common issue. When you get back to the truck, unplug the motor and see if you get power there when you turn the switch.
P1812 is the number it threw. It is "4WD Mode Select Switch Circuit Fault"
Well my dad changed out that switch on my truck yesterday and that did not solve the problem..
Ya I will do that when I get home in a few weeks. My diesel mechanic said that sometimes the body control module sometimes went out on the older f250s...
