thats how my radiator is done too. I want something much simpler and cleaner in rear for when the bed sides aren't mounted than a any sort of latch setup I can think of would require. i have yet to finish what I have in mind but it will require a wrench to get the bedside off. even though i think it will be super clean when the bedside is on or off

here's a neato sketch to illustrate what I was talking about :)

put the latch(s) on the qtr panel. then all you have is a loop or something that the latch grabs

you still would have something sticking out besides the loop for the latch to pull tight against. I looked though the austin hardware catalog for quite a while trying to find something that didn't have anything sticking out when the latch was removed and most of the latches I found(with lock) wouldn't fit in the space available because the lever would get in the way. I think I want all the bedside attachment hardware on the bedside and only a single hole on each bumperette for a bolt.

Latches sound like a good way to lose a bedside when you're bouncing around the desert at 100mph.

it's all how you design it. If all the latch is designed to do is hold it in from swinging out it would be fine. small spring clips hold radiators in on millions of cars. they work b/c they are not holding the radiator up...just keeping it from rocking backwards.

If you designed it where it would pull the qtr in and forward it would do the job. And I'm talking about one of the cam type the ones kind of like a chain boomer.

Lighter than an aborted full size bronco. We've been over this before, it's a bunch of 1/8" and chromoly, it will be lighter than you think.

How much argon have you gone through?

alot I'd guess 20 or 25 bottle's(the biggest ones) and 80 pounds of rods(varius materials er70s2, 307L, silcon bronze) but there's a lot of waste of the rods

Looks bad ass as usual. What is the theremostat waterlog? Some sort of a coolant "manifold"? The trans tunnel looks bigger than I remember it, would be interesting to see how the engine/trans sit compared to the stock stuff.

I also forgot or didn't realize it was going to be turbo. Can't wait to see it shag ass.

Overall I like seeing such a combination of skill, vision, patience, and persistence come together. The nice home shop setup doesnt hurt either :gigem:

Almost forgot, I can finally envision what this might look like when it is all cleaned up and painted. Clear coat wouldn't be a bad choice of color. The plastic cherokee parts will look cheap in comparison. Either way, I could see it in desert sports mag.

Ryan have you had a very detailed plan of this thing's build the whole time, or just a general idea and decided how/what to build for each part as you go along?

i can't see any of the pics but im assuming this is accurate. do you not ever want to race it in an actual desert race? forced induction is not allowed in any class. what good is a turbo if you never get to use it? we don't exactly have a bunch of dunes around here to play on.

with the tube chassis/chevy motor the only thing it is good for is a play car\pre-runner, and I plan to drive this on the street alot. more hp=more fun. the dunes in OK are just as close to me as any good rockcrawling. no plan build/design as i go, but I always wanted it to be a dual sport type of deal because i enjoy dune riding just as much as crawling

More updates. Ryan was slightly sidetracked by an RC Rockcrawler and building a badass aluminum skidplate for his cousin Charlie's dirtbike to replace the ****ty stock plastic one. This thing came out badass.

Flem and I went over and hung out with St.John tonight. He's been busy doing a lot of different things. It's been so long since I've been over to look at it, I kind of forgot where he was at on the project. Oh yeah, welding his ass off, that's where he's at.
