what size should i get? brian has a 12k that i could mount up, i could take the 5k off the back of the cj, or use some kind of 3k little winch. and there is always the harbor freight special 6k or whatever it is.
i have a reciever that i'm going to weld onto and a warn cradle that i can use so its removeable. I also have 2 1000cca fleet bateries that i'm going to use to power it. to start they will be charged by the charging wire from the tow vehicle and eventually i will add a solar charger to maintain them when not in use.
how do I hook up the charging wire to charge the batteries?
Make sure the batteries have a good ground to the trailer frame, and then just tie the "HOT" wire into the positive post.
We have used the 3k's on my 4 wheelers to pull vehicles up on our neighbors trailer and it is all it wants even with a snatch block. I recommend the harbor freight one if it's going on a reciever cradle (becuse they walk off so easily). Have you thought about mounting it inside the toolbox?
I would not hook the wire "directly" to the car battery. Put in a resetable fuse. You can get them at radio shack or I think O'reilly's has them. If you are not familar with them they they are rectangular with 2 terminals. They will alow current to flow through, but if too much goes through they will heat up and trip. Once they cool down they will reset automatically. This prevents you from shorting out and lighting something on fire.
I have a ramsey 8k on mine and I have had issues pulling broken tirds on it with the single line. On that one I have had to use a snatch block and then it gets them up. These problems usually occur when I do not use my ramps or a big truck has flat tires and I am dragging it....

Like I said, if you are going to have room to store it in the toolbox, why not just hard mount it in there? Yes, it is a bit more fab work than welding a reciever tube on, but it would be much more peemp. :D
