Bought a Taco

Well here is a pic in the day of the Tacoma. I was unloading it from the trailer and the wife thought it was picture time.

Ok on to the nitty gritty, I would estimate it took about two hours a wheel/tire combo to unfawk the crappy ass H1 tires from the H1 rims, rip an insert out, put the insert into the tire with some beads, make sure the O-ring is seated right and not come out at the last minute and then bolt the 12 bolts down as hard as I could. It was a learning experience and next time it will go a lot faster.

Here I was pissed at the bead and making sure it broke.

When those front springs settle in a bit, I bet it will set just right.

I don't know what you used to tighen the bolts down, but I just crisscross with an air impact and call it good. If I had plans to do a good bit of street driving I would probably put a torque wrench to them.

I drove it to work today so I will take a mall crawler pic of it in the garage.

How does it drive on the road? Assisted steering?

No assist yet but that will come before the month is over.

I have a VERY slight wobble in the front end at 35 but once i get to 40 it is gone. I am on the other hand having a real bad hop in the ass end over 55 MPH, that I have no clue what is causing so I will have to start looking into that. My springs are rated for a lot higher weight than I currently have (I stripped the truck down to do all the work), so once I get it loaded back down I am going to have to see what happens to the hop.

Did you state if you used some type of dynamic balancer or not? I know you don't want to hear this if you didn't, but break them back down and throw a few golf balls in. That thing is too nice to not be able to drive down the road. ;)

Yeah I threw 12 Oz. of Dyna Beads in each tire.

Ok, good, hopefully it's just a small flat spot on the tires that will work it self out, or just a light truck on the 'heavy' suspension.

Had the same hop on the Military tires, so I am going to narrow my thoughts to suspension at this point. I wish I had some balanced 37's to try in the back just to check things out.

they will still wooble, the only way to get that on the go balancing shiat to work is if you accelerate at a slow steady speed from every stop and its still marginal. we tried every possible way we could think of to get ours to balance (hutchinsons on h-1) ended up having them shaved by a big rig tire place

What is involved with this shaving you speak of? I am unfamiliar with it.

Deliberately removing rubber from the tread of the tire to make them perfectly round. Same ultimate goal as ballancing but more practical for bigass tires.

they put the fully assebled wheel on a machine that checks the run-out(wobble) at speed and they shave the tread where needed. there are also heavy boot type thingys that they put on the inside if it's really fawked. beadlocks really are not meant to be balanced and all of these fixes really are only good till the tire wears a little or looses a lug or two and it just as bad as before. first thing I would do is find the worst one and flop it 180 on the rim. that low speed wobble you have is probably the balancing beads in the tire bunched up at first then as u speed up they disperse to where they are needed(that's how our centramatics worked).

Hmm, got ya. Thanks for the explanation, never knew they did that on big rig tires. I am going to be loading up the ass of the truck tonight for my run to K-Rocks this weekend so I will continue to see what I can do to help get the hop out of it.

Those will stay off. I have a White Trash of the Elwood Chapter Decal on the roof I have to take off, and it will be basically sticker free (finally!)

Update:

Ok so I loaded up the toolbox with about half my tools, installed my 33" spare tire (don't have time this week to find a 37"),hi-lift, and gas can holders last night in preparation for LSLC's Round-Up at K-Rocks. Drove it to work this morning and start to feel the familiar hop around 55 but it was much less exaggerated. I decided to push it to 60 and the rear hop went away. I really believe that the springs are just "under" loaded and I need to put some more weight in my ass end to counteract all of this new unsprung weight of wheels and tires.

Did you destroy all of the HMMWV tires?

nah I think I still have one that will work, I didn't fork up the bead on it, and I am thinking about using it is as a spare. Why you need some?

Now it looks like a rig from our club!! How'd all the new parts work?

It performed out of this world. I love this truck, crawl box is amazing, and the rockers gripped like nobody's business.

I flopped because we were fighting daylight trying to find the trail. I was leading a rag tag group of wheelers down off the top of this rock outcropping and finally found where we had come up. I was trying to drive over a ledge when I still hadn't come off another one and slowly tumped over. What sucks is it was the first trail I ran since I built the thing up! :(

i really wish i had posted up about it being dumb to build a rig with body to screw up now. i was trying to be nice and didnt say anything.

Dumb as you may think it is/was, it is what I wanted to build up. and I am still EXTREMELY happy with it, body damage and all.
