I was driving with my new fans and my alternator went out im pretty sure. Because my new electric fan was pullin too much juice. So I was told that there is an alternator swap I can do to my truck (86 Jimmy w/ 350,) to put on an early model alternator from a car or something. If anyone has info on this let me know. Or how to get a bigger alternator while cutting costs, again Im thinkin junkyard.
i think you can just use a stock 140 amp alternator, i think they came in teh camaro, but i am not sure.
do you know how much the stock one puts out that I have?
i think it is a 90 amp, but i am not sure on that one too, just go to the parts store and ask, napa would give you the most info.
You can not just use the 140 amp. It mounts different and you don't have the computer to control it. A 90 amp alternator should be enough and I think that's as big as the normal delcos got, maybe 96 amps. Other than that you can choose from a whole ****load of aftermarket high amp alternators or high amp conversion kits.
Search for cs144. I have beaten this topic to death. Its cheap but will be a PITa to mount in your situation. After you search if you have any specific questions let me know.

An 86 was carb'd and only had a ~70 amp alternator so yes with the fans upgrading is a neccesity. Before I made the swap on my truck with my factory 70 amp alternator the fans would drain the batteries even with the engine running.
same thing happened to mine on the side of 47 at the last cleanup. fans out right killed battery with the motor runningQuote:

Advance, O'Reilly's and Napa sure as hell do have the pigtail. Find a counterguy who isnt a dunce.

Alright so I put in it and wired it up, and it works. But, the wires wiring up the fans are still getting extremely hot, I put a relay on, got a bigger alternator, whats the deal? Im pretty sure the wire we used to wire up the fans is like 12 gauge or 10 maybe. Any suggestions?
how long are the fan wires? are you sure of the guage of the wire?
The wires are no more than 4 1/2 feet long for any of them. Mostly about 2 maybe. Some of the wires might be 14 gauge. But Im pretty sure its 12 or bigger
put a bigger guage in if everything is wired right.

Is the radiator clean, if not the fans may just be working too hard and not getting enough air to let them spin correctly.
the wires that run from my fan to the 12 volt source are like 8 gauge i think.
12 gauge should be adequete for that application. The windstar fans I am running draw as much if not more power than any other fan out there so if wire that heavy is getting noticably hot the fan's motor might be fecked up.

Well me and my buddy figured it out, its the ground wire that went from the fan to the body, I spliced it with a 12 gauge, and not a 10 gauge, so it was overheating the wire, so we fixed that and BOOM BABY! It works, my engine stays so much cooler now, and that alternator is nice too. Thanks for the help!
I found this application chart while browsing ebay so all you suckas wont keep bugging me about what vehicles CS144's came in.

I know this guy doesn't exist anymore, but is he saying he swapped out a 10 gauge wire for a 12 gauge? I'm hoping he realizes like guns, wires get bigger the smaller their number.Quote:
