How the hell can a drive shaft ujoint failure result in a catastrophic crash? WTF...

How? Does the shaft separate and swing around to hit the tie rod some how?
On an IFS I could see a front half shaft fragging and taking out a tierod, hence the situation you depicted.
Not the front driveshaft...think about the tcase/transmission side ujoint on a rear dshaft falling apart at 80 mph, now think about a pole vault
