swapping a 14 bolt
My axle shaft broke at tcc and it destroyed my carrier and spider gears also, so the total cost to fix the 10 bolt is around 350, i can get a 14 bolt for a lil under 150, what will it take to get that swapped to my jimmy, and will it end up being cheaper?
I figured that 2 rims in the back, changing the yoke on the driveshaft, and maybe an ebrake cable? what else would i need to do?
-
you can get a conversion joint for the different yokes instead of changing it.
i would think it should bolt in but we'll wait for sharpe
-
you might need to do a brake job on the 14 bolt, you atleast need to check them out, and you dont have to change the yoke, you can just do a conversion u joint, you might have to shorten your driveshaft, you might have to do something with the braking system, i am not sure if there is a big enough difference between a 10 bolt and a 14 bolt to have to do anything though.

want to buy a disc braked 14 bolt? I have one in my garage...
-
how much and will it pass inspection, ineed an ebrake
-
No ebrake.... I never have had a problem getting my blazer inspected without one.
You should swap out the front disc's and bearing hubs too 8 lug to match.
-
Also, if you don't want to go that route, I have all the drum brake hardware that I can warranty out for my old setup.
-
if i do this i will eventually, i need something that will be strong and not cost an arm and a leg, send me a pm and tell me how much you want, what kind of gears does it have?
-
Going with Doug's axle would be a good choice. It is ready to bolt in so you dont have to worry about anything except the e-brake situation if it really concerns you. For the record, 3/4 ton 14 bolt housings will bolt into a 1/2 and 3/4 ton truck (like your jimmy) but a housing from a one ton truck would have to have the spring perches cut off and relocated 2 1/2" wider.
-
i would just fix the 10 bolt since you dont do much wheeling on rocks, and you would have to convert the front axle to 8 lug, it will most likely be cheaper.
but if you dont ever want to worry about it again then go for the 14
-
will the same ubolts bolt up also?
-
No, you will need u-bolts for a 3 1/2 tube axle and new spring plates too.
-
can i get those from a junk yard or are they hard to find?
-
You can buy a kit from offroaddeisgn.com that has u-bolts and plates for a decent price.
-
if you have 373 gears i have a set for a 10 bolt that i will sell you if you decide to stay with the 10 bolt
