    rifle

i'm looking for a varmit/ deer rifle. more varmit than deer but i want one where if i were to go deer hunting i could still use it or maybe on hog. definatly not a 22 but no bigger than a 30-06.
a package rifle scope would be ideal. I'm willing to pay for it as this is one of those things that i will have for a long time. i don't need something expensive but want to stay away from the cheap crap.
i don't want an odball or caliber that the ammo is to expensive. the more common and cheap the ammo the better.
used is fine but nothing worn out. anyone know of some for sale or have one sitting around that they want to get rid of

so you want something in in between a .177 BB gun and a 500 Nitro Express

.22- to a 30-06 is pretty much from one extreme to the other

like i said in the first post a 22 is too small but i was just trying to see what people had for sale and i might jump on it. i'm not sure what i want but since i will probably end up shooting at targets and rabits and may never go deer hunting whatever ends up being a good deal and versitle will win

if you do have something please post some specs and prices thanks

personally my favorite "all around" caliber is a .270, but for varmit shooting i like the smaller .222, 22-250 and .223 calibers.

if you want something that will work for varmint as well as deer, i would say .243. .270/30-06 are too much for varmint hunting.

also, be weary of any scope combo as the scope is going to suck and generally the rifle will be less quality too. for instance, the remington 710 is a far cry from a remington 700.

I've hunted with .270s for most of my life, and they are a great all around gun. Yes, it may be a little big for small game like squirrels and rabbits, but that is what .22s are for. They are great for coyotes, bobcats, and turkeys. As far as brand, I love rugers. I've abused the hell out of them, and have never had a single problem, and my stainless .270 M77 MKII is a tack driver.

My next rifle is going to be a Ruger Frontier in a .308 or .338 Federal (still researching this round).

They're designed to be a scout gun, being short and lightweight, with two options on where to mount the scope (standard position, and forward like in the picture). I'm going to set it up for shorter ranges (0-200 yrds) with the scout type scope setup, and use it for a brush/varmint gun. I think it might be a gun you should check out, as it will work well for what you are describing.

as is mine but i bought it when i was 12 and did not understand ruger. i have since limited my ruger purchases to 10/22's though. for an explanation, scroll down to the "controversy" section.
