    Vice

No I don't mean gambling or alcoholism - though either of those might be fun too.

I need a cheapo vice for my workbench before this weekend as it will be necessary for doing my CTM rebuild. Anybody got one? Do pawn shops have this king of thing? Harbor Freight?
    Thanks,

I think the sears vise wasn't much more than the harbor freight vise. Get the biggest or the most expensive

Krebs picked a bad ass one up for $.35/lb at Bryan Iron & Metal. Not sure I'd buy a new chinese vise...I've broken a few. Watch CL and get a big old one. I have a big one and a smaller (still old) one that I made a receiver hitch mount for, it's come in handy a few times.

I'd rather get an old one, both for cheapness and because "they don't build 'em like they used to" definitely applies here.

Bryan Iron & Metal is a good idea. I really don't want to go dig around in that place though. Think they would know if they have one so I could call?

I dare you to call Bryan Iron & Metal and ask them if they think there might be a nice big vise out in the piles somewhere

How are you guys secruing them? I have a VERY ****ty vice mounted to my wooden work bench. It is on a corner directly above a 4x4 post, but the mounting holes only hit the post on two sides, the other secure just to the plywood top. It wil move the table, which is secured to the wall, when I really get on it. I am thinking I need to rob a 6x6 beam from the jobsite.

big fookin washers on a 1" thick work bench. I think for you an extra 2x4 under the plywood should be enough if it spans the short length of the table.

yeah mine is through 5/8 plywood and 5/8 mdf and it is more than secure. I made sure and put lock washers on the backside to keep them from loosening and wallowing out the holes.

I thought i was going to have to put a 2x6 on the backside but this has worked fine so far.
