    Track Radios

Anyone know crap about how to shop these things? We definitely need to find something good. We used some Motorola devices this weekend, but evidently the in-car unit was a $2500 unit.

Not interested in that level. We need about 3 - 4 radios. The car definitely needs to have a push to talk and in-helmet headset. The "pit boss" (or whatever it's called) needs to have a hands free mount, maybe headset.

I'm not sure if simple crap like this will work:

Or do I have to have something at this level:

CBs aren't private enough. You don't want people junking up your channel.

Since they had theirs stolen, I'm sure he's looking again. I don't need "Porsche" level ones necessarily. I looked at what Rami was using (Kenwoods) and they sounded fine.

The problem is that I know NOTHING about this kind of stuff and there seems to be a HUGE variation in the equipment. What distinguishes good from crap?

We got some new Kenwood radios instead of Nextel at work now. The radios were about $300 a piece though. I think Skyline Comm. hosts the service. I cant stand them but you do have your own "channel".

If it's skyline, I bet you're using a repeater service of some kind.

Get a $14 ham radio license and then a 70 dollar 2M walkie talkie. They have push to talk, etc...

we were loaned some through this place. I think all it was was some kind of handheld linked to a talk button on the wheel.
I think you need at least two headsets for the non-drivers. one spotter and one for the crew on the wall so they can be sure to be ready. we had a couple of handhelds one in the pit and one up top. the guy up top was standing next to the spotter and relayed info back and forth. w/ three you could eliminate all this.
