    Vertical Winch Mounting

I am looking to mount the new Warn on the front of the truck in a vertical position. Something like this.

What thickness plate do yall recomend? I have some 3/8"s plate (I believe).

yeah, I was expecting something really cool that I haven't seen before.

that gets done all the time. I think TJM or ARB has a few bumpers that mount that way.

I wouldn't trust that design. I'd at least have that metal piece bent and not welded, but I fear that even mentioning this will bring out the take your kid to work day engineers

No, nothing superspanktacular about it. Just mounting the 'bottom' of the winch on the same plate as the fairlead instead of to the 'bottom' plate. I just needed an opinion on material thickness is all. Thanks for all the insight into the wonderful world of winch mount engineering that you two have so graciously brought to this thread.

I see what you're saying about vertical now. I don't like it, easier to tie it into a bumper or whatever to make it more solid if it's mounted to the bottom plate. Plus, the fairlead and that plate can take a beating while offroading.

What is the advantage to mounting a winch "vertical" vs. standard?

any warn over 12000 lbs they recomend feet forward mounting. I would think it puts the load on the mount only instead of on the bolts. my m8000 is mounted that way, I think it can be made to look much cleaner.

The instructions for mounting my M8000 showed that as an option. I'd prefer it because you're not trusting four 3/8" bolts to hold the winch down, but I guess I've never heard of anyone breaking the bolts. I think Warn sells mounting kits for that setup and they're 1/4" thick.

the problem I see is the huge lever it creates from where the winch sit on the mount to where the mount bolts to the frame? and no bracing to the vertical plate?

I didn't think we were critique'en on the mount pictured just the winch position. the mount pictured blows. I don't know if I have ever seen a feet first mounting that I liked that wasn't on a tube car, or a mass manufacured winch bumper, all the homebuilt ones just look huge to me.

Yes, if it is done like that, then it is going to put a good bit of stress like you said w/ out proper bracing. I think that I will be able to recess mine into the front of the frame and use the mount as the front crossmemeber also, thus giving it all the bracing it will need. I will just have to make sure the radiator will be able to set over the top of it. It will be nice not having it hanging so far out front also to keep the already heavy front in check some.
