    Tyson's Dog Wheel chair

I'll put the back ground of the injury of here when I'm more bored.

Couple people actually took interest so I'll just quote them in this post.

    Bunch of people being sympathetic.

He's perfectly happy and healthy other wise, just can't use his rear legs. One other complication is they lose control of their bladder and bowels. The only good thing is the loss of control isn't the pee/crap leaking out, it's the opposite, you actually have to express the urine. The vet said they can usually learn to pooh on their own again.

I'm not sure how many dog owners would go through this trouble/money for their dogs. I'm sure some people think we're completely retarded, but as long as he's happy we don't care. If he were older 10-12 we might think differently, but he's only 5.

I'll probably start a wheel chair thread soon. I want something cool for him, not some generic off the shelf cart. I'll probably have to cludge something together out of PVC initially just to get him something. The final version will be TIG welded light aluminum frame, with small bike rims, high quality sealed bearings, and a neopreme harness with nylon webbing.

I know neopreme would be hot, but it help spreads the load better than mesh. His life jacket has mesh, but it has more surface area and is meant for a different load.

I've got access to a wire edm, cnc mill (for small stuff), and manual mill/lathe.

However, if Flem wants to mess around, it could be fun.

what about thinnish foam covered in nylon with hard plastic sewn on the ends for grommets to punch through. Like a backpack shoulder strap. Not as much give as neoprene, but i think maybe neoprene would chafe? just a thought.

Only reason I'm stuck on neopreme is because that's what alot of the commercial people use. I may end up buying this one anyways, as they sell it separately.

    For example:

For some reason the edit keeps timing out in the first post. I'll just stick the story here.

I know there is dog people on here, so I’ll tell the full story.

So on the way home from picking up the CUCV I get a call from my friend Brian, who’s taking care of our dog (Tyson). He says Tyson can’t move his back legs. Brian had called me in the morning and told me Tyson was limping a little bit, but I figured he had a torn paw pad, a burr, etc… Who the hell would think this? So I called our friend that is in vet school and she came to our house to check on him. She figured like me it was something minor. She didn’t even change out of her PJ’s to come over. She called me within 15 minutes and told me she was bringing Tyson to A&M

So we had just gotten on 290 when I got the call and we headed straight to the vet school. When we got there, they were still examining him and I was asked a bunch of back ground questions. I finally saw him around midnight and talked with a vet student about the situation. I didn’t like her much. She didn’t have the best bed side manner, was crappy at explaining things and she made the situation sound really grim. This was after hours emergency staff, so I’ll give them a little leeway.

Monday morning he was sent to Neurology. I went in around 11:00am for the neurologist to explain what they had found. He has degenerative disk disease, not good news. He’s also in stage 5 which is means he has no deep muscle pain. Check out the link if you’re interested. Degenerative disk disease

He’s at home now, but he’s frustrated as hell. He can’t figure out why he can’t get up and walk around. The vet says this takes a couple of days for them to figure out.

It’s hard to see your dog go from being able to do a standing jump as high as a 4ft chain link fence and run around and cut with the best of them, to lying on the floor trying to drag himself around.

He's a border collie lab mix or a mutt. Mutts are generally much healthier, but can still have problems like this once in a while.

    Thanks everyone...

Anyone find some rims better looking than this? I think I want to stay with the 16" size. These are also aluminum, so it would be easier for him to pull around.

    Ebay Link
