so the shaft that i got sent is overall about 7/8"s too long. The splines are about 2" long. I was thinking about cutting about 1/2" off the inner and 3/8" off the stub so that it would sit correctly in the knuckle. What do you guys think? Should i do that or take 7/8ths off the inner?

7/8's off the inner, if you chop off the stub your hubs won't go back together or find the right shaft.

assuming it doesn't kneck up after the splines. never cut a stub. it has a machined lip at the end a c-clip goes. as long as it is a ford stub i believe it is the same. is it the same size as your old stub

I'm still confused as to why your shaft is consistently an inch shorter. I would suggest a visual inspection before cutting.

    ie:

    take off diff cover
    clean everything
    inspect carrier
    insert shafts in question
figure out exactly how/what needs modification
    make modifications
put **** back together until next blown shaft

when i measured my broken long side it measured about 34"from the tip to the center of the u-joint cap. That's what this site says it should be

Notice how the earlier model trucks shafts were about an inch longer. Thats what i think this new shaft is

What ever you do, make sure that the center of the u-joint is going through the center of the kingpins/balljoints. If it is out of line, it is going to bind up when you turn and cause problems.
