    Trail Safety: Fire Protection

Fire extinguishers were brought up at the meeting tonight and this is a good article on why this is an item that you should not cheap out on.

    http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/2010-fire/index.php

Once I get my blazer back on the trail I will be getting a good 5 or 10 lb one to mount in the bed and a smaller one to mount next to the drivers seat.

A good reminder and a great article. I have been putting it off for too long. I will be ordering two 2.5lbs of the dry chemical H3r extinguishers. 4 wheel parts is having a sale. Both units for $100 shipped.

Ive always had one never used it, But on the subject if you do have one remember to check and make sure its full and replace it when its out of date. A fancy (expensive) one is nice but the ones from the auto parts will work also, Its better to have something rather than nothing.....

i would be 100% supportive of the safety officer having at least one of these on hand. I think it is an important safety feature that the club would be more than justified to purchase. I know this responsibility should fall on each individual off-roader but I would hate to see someone loose a vehicle or get hurt because of something as cheaply and easily implemented. Just a thought, maybe talk about it at the next meeting.

Well... When my Jeep caught on fire my cheap auto parts store extinguisher did not work, and was well within its lifespan.

...I won't be relying on another one of those.

Are there any other sources for roll bar mounts for fire extinguishers? I am not paying $110 for a brushed aluminum band clamp and roll bar mount from H3R.

Or you could probably just modify and beef up a standard wall mount one.

Or something like this modified to work maybe?

I was going to suggest something like this. Using strong band clamps have always seemed like a great alternative to the high-price BS. If done right they won't brake and are still fast and efficient for removal.

There was a guy on tx4x4 that had some nice aluminum clamps, but they weren't exactly cheap. I will look again and see if I can find the price.

Ok, it's Colman Mfg Co. on tx4x4. He was around 100 for the pair in the picture below, but everyone is just using one per extinguisher.
