I think you are asking, 'Where is the best place to get it? Are there any brands to stay away from?'

I have been looking into this for a while. I would like to save weight and that is my only motivation as I have no other problems with standard aircraft cable. However, I only payed $400 for my LP8500 and am not going to spend an equal amount just on the winch line. I am also sticking with the 5/16"x~100' of cable which has a breaking point of 12,300lbs. So if you want a different length or diameter then obviously the prices would be different. Always go with AmSteel blue (at least that is what I have heard, no personal experience).

These are the best prices I have found (in descending order). . .

    http://www.winchline.com/index.html
    $289.70 with safety thimble
$274.73 with tube thimble and hook

A pirate4x4 quote from 'Custom Splice' on 2-20-11 was $205 shipped for tube thimble and hook.

    http://rockstomper.netfirms.com/shop...?cPath=1_26_35
$195.05 with tube thimble and hook
    $191.00 with stainless thimble only

    http://www.amsteelblue.com/item.cfm?itemid=44772
$188.72 with stainless thimble and hook
    $185.35 with tube thimble only
    $179.02 with stainless thimble only

Remember you will also need a new fairlead for synthetic rope.

    Hope it helps!

I found this on amazon as you can tell it looks "el cheapo" but then again then again I only have about 20$ in the M6000 its going on.... Hard to justify spending 200+ on a 20 dollar winch. Is the Amsteel Blue supposed to be that much better?

Yes the AmSteel blue is supposed to be that much better. I know JB bought some kind of off-brand line for his winch recently so I will wait until he chimes in on the matter. Whatever route you go I would cover the line up if it is stored outside, supposedly UV-radiation rots the hell out of these things.

JB broke his winch line at TCC but it was most likely due to the fact that it was wrapped around a rock. I tied it back together and it held pulling corey's jeep over some stuff during the comp course. I'll let him chime in on how it's done in the past.

I thought I tied it back together hahaha, for 150 or so that sounds kinda like a good deal.

it broke because I was a dumbass and wrapped it around a boulder. I am going to try and cut it back and reuse it.

Won't break real cable when you wrap it around a boulder, or if for any other reason the line contacts an edge.

I have a Rockstomper one. I also broke it in an area that was probably rubbed on something. I'm still using the same rope, it just broke off about 8' - 10' of it with the hook. I tied it around a clevis for now and I don't trust it as much.

Before that I felt generally safer with rope due to the lack of recoil if they break. I know people have broken cables before also, but it weirded me out when I broke that. It's a scary thought when you're doing something like this.

Yep, that is. I put a new winch on just before that trip, and you're looking at what it was first tested on.

I have never seen a cable break where it recoiled anything close to what everybody is scared of.
