    The Bob: 1956 Chevy 3600

    Started work on a weekend cruiser. Goal is to have something that I can roll down the windows and enjoy a Sunday afternoon in or putter around town while running errands. I want to bring it back to 1956 stock conditions; not a show truck but very clean. This truck was born the same year as my father and has spent it's entire life in Texas (3 owner truck) so for that, it is named after him.

    Specs are:
    1956 Chevy 3600 (model 3604)
    Original everything (minus wheel/tires/paint and steel plate in bed)
    235.5-cubic inch in-line 6-cylinder
    Regular Production Option 4 speed trans with granny low and driveline e-brake
    2wd full floating rear axle with 4.57:1 gears
    12" manual drum brakes front and rear


    I have a little bit of rust to deal with in the driver/passenger floor panel and toe panel but it's not bad at all. No rust in any other part of the cab or frame.

    Over the past two weeks I have been cleaning it up.
    I tuned up the engine (new plugs/cap/rotor/wires/coil pack).
    Gutted the interior and prepped the floors for metal work.
    Changed the transmission and rear axle fluid.
    Removed all 4 original shocks.
    Removed the rusted original exhaust.


    Deadline to get it back on the road is July 4th for a neighborhood parade and car show.

    To do:
    Patch floor panels
    Install new stock exhaust
    Install new custom shocks
    Change oil
    Install new drag link
    Build custom tie rod using 1956 Chevy 3800 tie rod ends
    Install Regular Production Option lap belts
    Insurance
    Title transfer and Antique Registration


    It should be a fun little project.

    Whats the top speed on that thing like 60 mph?

    I haven't gotten it above second gear yet. I'll let you know after it is street legal and road worthy.

    A quick crunch of the numbers shows a 32:1 crawl ratio and 3200 rpms at 60mph. However, it has slightly undersized tires now. With the stock tire size it would be at 3000 rpms at 60mph.

    You should look at re-gearing that rear end to something that won't have the engine screaming at 55mph. I bet you could find a used set of gears pretty cheap, like for $22, just make sure you count the teeth.

    New tires.
    235/80R16 in the back and 235/75R15 in the front.


    Slowly working on fixing the rust in the floor pans


    Front is all new rebuilt


    All new cooling system and refurbished radiator


    New hoses, belt, water pump, thermostat. Everything flushed, washed and painted.




    New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, distributor clips, coil.


    New exhaust. 2" into muffler and 1 7/8" out back. New oil pan and gasket


    New centerlink, brake hoses, custom built shocks, custom built tie rod with standard moog tie rod ends.

    Cleaning up nice. Plans to fix the oil leak at the head (I think that's what I'm seeing.)?


    What was custom about the shocks?

    I don't believe there are any leaks just shakey hands when filling the steering gear box and a leaking 1 barrel carb. I'm getting a new rochester carb in on wednesday so I can start fresh.

    The shocks are custom made by http://www.shocks2springs.com/ . They are a custom length and larger piston diameter for the heavier longbed. I could find shocks for the 1/2 ton 3100 model but not for the 3/4 ton 3600 model. The lengths that are in all the books for shocks specs are not correct so I had to get them custom made. They were surprisingly affordable.

    Got it registered, title transfered and road worthy after a nearly 30 year hiatus from the road.

    I couldn't be happier to be driving it around. . . although it rides, brakes and turns like a tank.

    Drove it nearly 100-miles around Dallas this weekend and up to Wylie for a Fourth of July Car show.















    I ordered a new steering gear box for it this weekend. The seals are screwed and the worm gear is very worn.

    Top speed is about 40-45mph. I don't trust the steering and brakes beyond that right now. A new steering gear box and disk brakes will go a long way.

    Why don't you paint the hood in brown primer so it matches, or at least paint the whole truck the same color.

    I'm gonna paint the cab cap and cowl black so that it has a two-tone theme, just ran out of time. The hood had a large dent in the nose, broken emblem and was very wavy from years of use. I spent a few days smoothing out the steel with a hammer and dolly and then filling in the imperfections with glaze, fillable primer and some flat black enamel. Gotta do a section at a time. The cowl and cab cap has its fair share of dents and dings that will need to be addressed as well.
