i took the 4 bolts out at the flange near the pinion, shouldn't the shaft slide forward into the yoke or whatever and then just come right out?

yeh thats normally how it works but remember your driving a ford.
You need to hit it with a big hammer.

damn you stevenFAGhoe3 and you too AG's HOOTER... i need a real answer... i coulda thought of those when i was drunk....
are you implying that you're occasionally sober?
as for your real answer, why don't you check to see if there is anything applying pressure to the driveshaft that would make it difficult to remove it. I dont know what like maybe the tranny is holding the truck in place instead of the parking brake.
driveshafts are usually kinda hard to get out....you might have to tap on the okes a bit with a hammer....this does not mean for you to go get the biggest sledgehammer that you can find and go to beatin the crap out of the driveshaft....remember: any dents in the tube will weaken the structure....
this is not to say that they dont sometimes fall out and land on your face. it happened to me one time when i was trying to tighten the pinion nut back down on the way to moab

hey bigFAWKINranger...use a bigFAWKINhammer...
sometimes they're stubborn...
and I'M the dumbass...
If you take the four bolts out the flange, the yoke fits tightly in a counterbore on the flange face. It is my guess that it has a bit of rust. Just give it a tap or try to pry it to the front of truck, it should pop out!
you ever get the drive shaft off?
