    9 inch?

    I bought a 9" from some junkyard on the way to San Antonio yesterday. It is fairly narrow, sprung under, and is 5x4.5. It is a 9" still, correct? It has a 3rd member and it is in the grid shape that 9" 3ms have. Is it the 28 spline model? That place also had a flat top knuckle dana 44 that would probably be fairly cheap. The guy didn't go by Dana..... He went by 1/2 3/4 1 ton. They had 2 rockwells there and I asked about them. I bet I could get them for cheap but now that I think about it I don't think they had a front and DAMN those things are HUGE.

    Anyway...

    Is it a 9"?
    Is it 28 or 31 spline?
    It is worth anything?
    Can it be upgraded?

    I know jeeps are 5x4.5 right? If so this thing must be way better than a 35c.

    That actually may be what I'm looking for...may have found one or two more in Corpus. There is a slight chance that it could be a Ford 8" or Ford 9 1/2", both of which are fairly worthless to any of us. If you'll post a pic of it I'll tell you for sure. I just need a good pic of the grid on the 3rd member and of the face of the diff. If you're still not sure of that just pull it apart and check everything yourself.

    I'll bet this axle is a 9". It must be an earlier one. According to ColoradoK5 the earlier ones had smaller housings. It is 5x4.5, so any of you Jeepers out there might want it. I should still be loads stronger than your 35C.

    Name your price. It is rusty and needs to be reworked obviously. I'm not asking for much.

    There is a 9" out of a Lincoln there. I need to check and see if it has disc brakes next time I head home.

    How wide is it?

    They are all fine for Jeeps - the bearing size makes a difference when dealing with larger, heavier vehicles, but going under a Jeep most likely won't hurt it.

    If the car out there is a Lincoln Versailles it most likely has discs - I believe that's the only model that had them though.

    It is narrow. I am going to measure it and take pictures at work tomorrow.

    I think the Lincoln was a Town Car and the junkyard man said it was a 9" but I didn't look at it. I'll probably call them and ask if it has discs and if they have a front and rear rockwell or just two rears.

    sorry to piss in your Cheerios, but it looks like a Ford 8" out of a Mustang to me...

    You are right. It is an 8".

    When identifying this family of axles look at the middle code on the bottom line of the tag. It could rear 8, 8.7, 9, or 9.5. All of those are ring gear sizes.

    I guess I will see if he wants to take it back and sell me the other one....
