i like it! that is what i have wanted to do to mine for like 2 years but a 4 cylinder cummins is like 5,000 from an onan/cummins dealer and that is rebuilt with turning in a core. I just dont have that kind of money at the moment.

It's most likely a 4bt... Most come from bread trucks or frito lay trucks with an sm465 behind them. They are notorious for virbrating everything apart.

I've thought about putting one in the blazer or putting in a 6bt, you can get them for around the same price.

People claim to get in the upper 20's in gas mileage. You can also turn up the 4bt pretty good.

David oliver will have some better insight

I just asked at Houston Ring and Pinion because thay had a bunch of the Frito-lay trucks out there with the 4bt's. I don't know if it was with the tranny but am pretty sure that they didn't have any 6bts there

I was wondering what the hell 4spd tranny could hold up to all that torque. I was hoping it wasnt the original jeep transmission!

I searched TDR for AT6 and found nothing, then I searched google and it's type of plane, also known as the Texan. Sweet, it has a rotary engine!

    i found this...

    search for at6 cummins

"The old Cummins AT6 inline six cylinder engine seems to be the best conversion of it's class. Other inline 6's available in North America include the LD28 (Early 1980's Nissan Maxima) and the SD33 (Nissan 6 used as an option in late International Scouts). Modern Cummins engines used in Dodge trucks are a lot heavier and bulkier than the earlier engines. I have yet to hear of a successful conversion. The Mercedes 300D engine has a number of fit issues (which seem to be at frame level) and would require a lot more engineering."

The AT6 is good in that it's cheap as hell to acquire and bolt in. There are very few power upgrades (injectors, valve springs, etc.) available for it, so you're kind of stuck with what you've got.

If you're going to go through the trouble of swapping in a Cummins i6, then make it the B series engine (89-98.5 Dodges), and a 96-98.5 if you can. That'll set you up with an engine that will work well in stock trim and is very upgradable. It's not too tough to find a 6BT/NV4500 combo with less than 75,000 miles. If you can find a wreck, then the intercooler/radiator assembly would be nice to have.

4BTs are nice since they fit so well in a Jeep, but Doug's right, it will vibrate the fillings right out of your teeth! An i4 with a 4.72" stroke will tend to do that, but with a maximum torque ouput close to that of a 6BT it may be worth it.

That junkyard is Houston has a crapload of Frito Lay trucks, but you can get them cheaper with the tranny and wiring harness (not that there's much of one) elsewhere. eBay has them regularly, and I see them from time to time as complete trucks for sale.
