1971 Cutlass Supreme Convertible Build-Up Thread

This is going to be the thread that I use to track all of my research and progress. I'm not quite getting started, but once I get a few button and tuck items done on the Cruiser, off I go. It will be a pro-touring theme and will no doubt be a 3 - 5 year project. I'm planning to start with the wheels and suspension and maybe a cam. Then on to the body work. Then the paint. Finally the interior. Then probably back to the drivetrain.

The stock colors are silver on black with a black top. I may use silver, but I'd really like to do a two tone paint job. I'm thinking black on the top with either a pewter or silver on the sides. Something Foose-esc.

I saw a Chevelle at SEMA that had the wheel and tire look I want. 20 x 10s on the back and 18 x 8s on the front. He said they fit well. Had to flatten the seams a little and they rub on hard turns, but man they were sweet. I wish I would have gotten a picture. I also didn't get the offsets, but I'm sure they're documented somewhere.

This thread discusses some of it.

I'd prefer air bags (if not spindle drops) and it looks like I'll have to add custom control arms in the rear with tubular A-arms in at least the tops, if not both, to fit the somewhat extreme wheel/tire combo.

Here's a very helpful thread to get me started.

Foose pimped up a 1972 on Overhaulin, so I took some notes for myself:

    - 442 recessed front grille
    - black paint on the back of the headlight bezels. Maybe just polish up instead?
    - what to do with the front bottom lights?
    - shave/fill front and rear side marker lights.
    - shave/fill door and truck locks
    - keep door handles (replace with new if necessary)
    - recenter OLDSMOBILE across the trunk lid
    - stock interior, just new everything as needed (seat covers, wood grain kit, etc.)
    - no side mirrors
    - no door bumpers, rubber or chrome
    - no rocker panel chrome
    - no chrome around the wheel openings
    - remove all outside badging except the rocket emblem on the front and the OLDSMOBILE on the trunk lid.
    - speaker box in trunk. One on each side and a board covering the top area also.
    - new inside and trunk carpet
    - keep chrome on bottom edge of trunk?
    - "tuck" bumpers? bring them in closer/tighter?
    - 442 style wood steering wheel

    OTHERS:
    - air ride shocks
    - hotchkiss suspension
    - new ramjet xxx chevy?
    - 5 speed auto trans?
    - 18s on front, 19s on rear (he did 17/18 I think on Overhaulin)
    - baer brakes front and rear
    - 9" or something HD for the rear axle?
    - two tone paint. 1" off the body line. champagne/black/silver/charcoal are all options. originally silver.

    - to date my thoughts, I think I'm leaning towards the second to the last wheel above. (Cobalt 5)

    - shave/fill front and rear side marker lights. - is this legal? maybe just put some itty-bitty ones in?

    - new ramjet xxx chevy?- ls2

    - 5 speed auto trans?- chevy has a 6 speed auto now

    - 18s on front, 19s on rear (he did 17/18 I think on Overhaulin)- i think the really big pro-touring rear wheels are tacky. i wouldnt go over 19.

    - to date my thoughts, I think I'm leaning towards the second to the last wheel above. (Cobalt 5)- i concur

    - shave/fill front and rear side marker lights. - is this legal? maybe just put some itty-bitty ones in? flush mount LED's, but shaved side markers is legal also if you just had to have it smooth

    - new ramjet xxx chevy?- ls7 dry sump and all

    - 20s on front, 24s on rear i think the really big pro-touring rear wheels are bad arse. i wouldnt go over 24.

    - multi piece forged light weight road racing rims are the way to go after having a set I think forged rim is a must if you are goin' large diameter and you plan to drive it much. The large diameter billit's really cant take much of pothole or road grade change with out getting bent. Out of all the billet wheels we've had they all go bent or repaired in one way or another. the 19' and 20' forgeline 3piece wheels with the 20 series tires on our vette have yet to bend even after my pops smashed countless potholes and city titty's while driving it to jobsites. crazy thing is you see in spots where the outer lip of the tire around the rim has been pinched of between the rim and road.

I personally would not do a clone, present the car as what it is.
