No the whole thing about 78-79 axles being better than the others is just internet crap. Ford didn't use 60 fronts from 80-85, but started again in 86. They still had kingpins into the early 90s. The only real difference between mike's axle and the 78-79 is that the spring perch width is wider. The 78-79 width is just about the same as a yj.

very wrong. the only closed knuckle 60's i know of are from the like 75 era, and the shafts we coarse splined like his rear end, and were abou tthe size ofa high pinion 44 shaft. 78-79 open knucle king pin best for swap into a 78-79 bronco f-150 cause of the pumpkin location. after 79 ford made the frames on the 80-96 trucks wider, so the pumpkin is pushed out. 88-like 91.5 or 92 still had king pins but the housing is moved like previously stated.
after 92 they went to open knuckle ball joint axles till the new superduty's came out with the metric pattern and unit bearings.

edit dammit i hate you pollock, but i think i had more info so i win right??? someone buy this darn axle, its a pretty decent deal.

97 had the same axles as the 96s but you left that out. So then in 99-01 all the single wheel trucks had a d50 in the front. Which uses the same outers, u-joints, and shafts as a the 60s of the era but the shafts are necked down to d44 size for the carrier, which has somethin about 9" high pinion diff. The duallys still had 60s. In 02-04 all the F250 - F550 trucks had a front 60 even with single wheels. The pattern is metric but just about any style wheel you would want is available, and the matching rear axles are 35 spline and have disc brakes. F550s are 10 lug and use a dana 135 rear axle. The 05s have 35 spline outers and are coil sprung with radius arms.

f-550's also have 1550 u-joints now and a completely different c and knuckle.
