    Beadlocking my 16.5's

So I had planned on buying H2 rims for the buggy and getting some kinda tire in the 17" variety. However, my 16.5" rims are beat to hell anyways, and one looses air because the edge of the bead is beat up.

So, I think I "found" a big enough piece of aluminum up at work to cut 4 17" rings out. For the outer ring I'm going to use regular steel so they'll hold up better. Another reason is that steel should be "found" also.

Most people don't mess with 16.5's because they don't have a safety lock. I've read a couple threads where people weld a bead around the circumference of the rim where a noral safety lock would be. I drew a line where I'd roughly weld a bead. Anyone see drawbacks to this?

So you want to weld a bead on those wheels for now, and then beadlock some 17s when you get around to it?

no bead lock the 16.5's now... I think the 17" ring confused you. This rim which is a 16.5 diameter would need a 17" inner ring.

Why weld a bead on the inside of the wheel?

the inner bead has no protection. While the beadlock would solve the outer beads problem, it won't solve the inner beads problems.

    In that case, do it.

do the rings basically bring the 16.5" lip out to 17"?
if so won't you need 8(10) of them?
and how are you planning to center the tires on the rims, won't you have to center it with 1/4" of gap between tire bead and seat on the rim?
maybe I don't know anything about the differences btw 16.5 and 17" rims

Also, i will need 4 aluminum rings that will weld to the rim and 4 steel rings that will clamp the tire onto the rim.

centering it will be like centering any other beadlock.

    oh now I get it
why don't you get some rim screws for the inside bead instead of welding that lip on it?

cause for rims screws you need a 3 things a budweiser-tall boy of course, dale earnheardt hat, and last but of course not least and the most complicated of these three a mullet. Now if doug grows a mullet before clayton then yes he can use rims screws.
