will die randomly at times. will start then immediately die again. will run when the air filter is pulled out or put back in if its already out. it will start with ether. i think its a fuel issue. tps or some sensor like that?

if it was tps, it wouldnt even let it start, its either on/off
it'll start with a bad or unhooked tps
i'd check fuel pressure, then hook an ohm meter up to the tps and check it out
I know from first hand experience that the HO's don't idle right with missing o2 sensor or VSS. Not sure about the regular 4.0
or you could wait until football season starts and I'll bring the flemco DRB2 scantool in town
edit: I just read the part about the air filter, sounds like your IAC is gummed up or broken. take it out, clean it w/ b12. Do you have oil blowby? that can cause them to get crap in them.

Hey queermo I have a OBDII scanner at mi casa, it maybe help?
On the 8th day god created the Super Swamper TSL and said "go forth and kick ass"
oil finds its way through the valve cover vent to the air box and soaks the filter so that could be it. where is the iac? i don't remember seeing it when i was looking at the air box etc. scanner may help; not sure if its throwing codes or not. the speedo works so i guess the vss is out.
its a friends jeep here in dallas.

This cherokee isn't Maaco Yellow is it?
A guy in the club had a non-HO 4.0L that when we plugged up the PCV Valve line that goes over to the air cleaner, it built up so much backpressure that when we twisted the oil cap to take it off, it sounded like a bottle of coke opening. You could also just set the oil cap in the hole while it was running and it would whistle like a tea kettle.

yea. doesnt have a pcv valve. has something called ccv. couldn't find a iac sensor either. that leaves me with the tps or map sensors. pulled the ccv rubber plug on the valve cover and it looks like someone dumped coffee grounds in there.
