I took a c-clip off just behind backing plate and pounded the **** out of the plate with a hammer but I can't get the shaft out. I bought it at a junkyard for a spare. What's the trick?

c-clip behind the brake backing plate? Sounds like you mean bearing retainer, not c-clip.
I've seen some that have zero clearance on the bearing and you pretty much need to remove (and replace) the axle bearing to get the backing plates off.
...
Sounds like Garrett's 9" where we ended up having to use a fire hydrant as a giant slide hammer and ended up destroying the bearings. Have fun.
On the 8th day god created the Super Swamper TSL and said "go forth and kick ass"
just use a bigger hammer
