I've always thought about using old oil as bar oil on a chain saw. The only problem I could see is if metal was in the oil. If you let it sit long enough I would think most of it would settle to the bottom. We've never used a chain saw enough to bother with this.

Old gear oil maybe, but motor oil is way too thin. And bar and chain oil is cheap

I'm sure that bar and chain oil is way more viscous than 10w30. The only real danger in using it though is of it running out too fast. Good saws tend to run out of gas with just a little oil left. if the oil was too thin it might run out before you ran out of gas and burn up a chain/bar, thus trying to save a few bucks on a gallon of bar and chain oil (that will last most people years) ends up costing you $30 to replace them.
90w always worked for us, it is a little slow when you start, but once the saw gets a little warm, it really sticks to the chain
