Craptastic! Anyone have 39" of tie rod material?

Somehow I thought the tubing we had up at our shop had a smaller ID... Well no bueno, it's ID is too big.

Who ordered the tierod material so you can use a tap?

You realize it sucks to tap it right? It takes a decent amount of time, plus my taps...

Do you need both tierod and drag link?

P.S. What material do you have anyways?

how bad is taping it, I am sure we can work something out.

The material that I have is an A513/5 1020 DOM 1.50x.375

    Well it's fine thread...

So basically I chuck it up in the lathe and face it off. That takes all of 60 seconds. Then depending on how deep you want it, I sit there with a crescent wrench and tap it by hand using the tailstock to hold the tap concentric.

It just takes a while, probably 15-20 minutes a hole, depending on depth. Ask Brian Ritchey or Robert Sharpe, I'm not sure I've let anyone else do it. I think I let Garrett have fun also.

And all this just costs you time since the school owns all this equipment. JEW

If you've got a manual lathe that starts at full speed tap under power. we do it all the time at work and it's never broken or dulled a tap. lowest speed and just bump it on and off, back it out when it spins in the chuck. Use a ton of tap magic or similar lube on the tap and run coolant on the outside of the material.

i know it works but it sounds so dangerous for expensive taps. i definately wouldnt let someone do that with my borrowed tap.

Hi, I pay for taps! Thats why I let people come in and do it if they want and I don't charge them to use the machine.

    P.S. Hello Pot!
