should i use my 135 mig or find someone with a stick welder, my gut tells me that it isn't powerfull enough to weld those spider gears together properly. if this is the case does anyone have a stick welder and want to help?

Red 81 CJ5, 35's, 4.10 and detroit, 4 to 1 dana 300, tbi efi, flat belly, cage, chromos and auzzie in front... sometimes runs. body damage to come
damn, seems like you read my mind. I pulled my D70 diff this afternoon and basically have the same questions. My little mig works pretty good for most stuff, but I feel that welding a diff is more than it can handle.
find a real welder, not a tiny mig
He who dies with the most **** wins, after seeing your collection you are in the lead no doubt!
so could a 175 or a 210 do it or does it need to be a stick

Stick is generally stronger than MIG. If you can get ahold of one at all, I would go with that over even a bigger MIG.
My D70 was done with a 210. It's held up to a healthy motor and big tires for over two years now. I wouldn't hesitate to MIG it with a 210. A 175 might work fine, I just don't know what it's capacity is.Originally Posted by colman
not true the filler metals are of the same strength ie 7018 to ER70s2 wireOriginally Posted by Gearhead61
it just depends on technique
a 6010 is actually weaker
anways stick will work find as long as you get the gears good and clean and make sure you dont get any cold lap. Don't hesitate to run a pass all of the way around, let it cool and then put another pass all the way around. whatever you do you don't want to put to much heat into the gears because it will greatly weaken them

You could use a smaller mig, but you will be running smaller beads and just have to make more passes to get what you need out of it. A smaller welder will do what a bigger one will, just takes a lot longer...
or, what Creighton said, but just elaborated on the technique part a bit.
Ok alright, I was thinking MIG wire was rated at 60 ksi, not 70. Thanks for correcting me.Originally Posted by AggieTJ2007
ive welded 6 so far now with a 210, its plenty and a ****load easier then doing it with a stick
