I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that it was driven on a bit after it was broken and so the ears on the axle shafts will be stretched out. I could be wrong but make dead sure that they are okay before just swapping in a u-joint and being done with it.
It makes a lot of clinks and clanks, come to think of it, I do remember it happening, but it was right when we were driving back, and I switched to 2wd for the ride home.
