My Aussie has worked great but if those were my two choices I would pick the Detroit.
I have had some trouble with my yj locking into 4wd. I got it fixed, but here is my question.
Can i slide the locking colar over, tack(weld) it in the locked position, then put manual hubs on it? Good or bad idea?
I know the right way would be to change axle shafts, but i dont want to go to that much trouble/money. I cannot find a theread that talks about doing this. If i can buy a $100 set of hubs, and weld this colar over i may do it, otherwise ill just live with the vac system. I only have 32's and just use the jeep to run hog traps/ go hunting.

I have the vacuum disconnect axle in my xj, I slid the collar over and held it by double wrapping a zip tie on that side. I don't know if I would tack it in place, would be a pain to remove if shaft ever broke. I would not worry about getting a set of hubs and doing all of the extra work. I have had mine this way for many years and no issues.

I wouldn't mess with lockouts, new stuff doesn't even use those or a disconnect anymore
TJ shaft is easy to do if you are willing to change gear oil.
...
I bet I have a longside TJ shaft that you can have for a case of beer. Doesn't have a sub shaft so you would have to swap over your stub shaft. I am assuming that you have the larger x297 / x760 ujoints

Throw a PSL900 at it.

You can't just buy hubs for a YJ axle, they don't take hubs. Hubs aren't good for much anyway, like to break. And if you unlock them, you have to lock them. I lazy.
Just zip tie the collar over like Tommy said, and go kill some piggies.
Thanks, i figured it took more than just hubs but wanted to check. I am leaning twards running a throttle/choke cable to the fork, and using a cable to shift that collar over. I thought about using a hose clamp to hold it in place like Tommy said, but i would still like to be able to unlock it.
