Well, I took her out on the road today. It steers almost too quick as of right now. I need to fiddle with the toe-in a bit more to see if it helps any. The to in is at about 1" right now and I don't think it is enough. What are you guys that are running big meats using on yours? I do know, I need a sway bar because the body roll in acceleration/deceleration causes some wicked steering going down the road. It's probably not that bad if you were to drive it more and get used to it. The best I could get out of it was 52 mph (and I think it is about 3-5 mph slow so I need to check it with the GPS tomorrow) and I think some of that may be from the crushed right exhaust pipe.
I installed the Mad 4WD High steer arms and put the tie-rod right at 7"s from the center of the kingpin. This calculates out to right at 70 degrees of total steering angle and puts the tires right at the leafs when the cylinder hits lock. I tested the steering once I put the drive slug back in the right hub and it didn't have any problem turning the tires on the cement. I will have to check it aired down and in the dirt and on some hills to see what it's going to do. I believe that the steering issues are taken care of though.
The rear cross member came out nicely also. I had to squeeze the bottom of the frame back in 2"s to get it back straight.I used 2x2x1/4" square tubing for it and added a receiver hitch on the top for an extraction point. I also cut out some old crappy braces from the PO that were used for the rear ball. This freed up plenty of room on the underside which should give me room to move a propane tank or air tank under the bed now.
The front pinion seal was leaking, so I replaced that seal. It was caused by the pinion nut backing off so I threw plenty of loctite on it and hit it with the 3/4" impact and called it good. Once I find the bolts for the roughcountry diff cover, I will change the fluid out in there too.
I will try to get pictures up tomorrow.
pics or we are no longer friends![]()
hey is my recovery strap in the back of the beast?
You will get use to the quick steering, I think that it steers better than the ford does
