Chevy Starter suggestion when running long tube headers?

So I have a 350 that has some hooker long tube headers on it. I changed the starter last week with the O'reilly "one they had in stock" starter. Well I ran the engine for about 15 minutes today breaking the cam in, now it will not start. The starter spins, but does not engage. I think the solenoid/plunger got melted from the heat of the headers.

The battery is good, has good voltage, cables are new, etc... so I don't think that is the issue.

The question is, what is the super bad arse starter for a chevy 350 that can be lit on fire, pissed on, dunked in the mud, sleep with hookers, etc... and still work?

can you just fab a heat shield out of sheetmetal?
what about cars that had a v-8 shoe horned in? maybe they have a shield that will work? caprice cop car w/ LT1? maybe a camaro? they good kind are the bi-metal ones w/ the insulation sandwiched in between and crimped on the edges.

I am thinking about a heat shield, but wanted to ask if anyone knew of a super starter. I talked to Luis about it, he said they usually use a gear starter. Comments?

Screw you Ed, you have no right to question me about my political beliefs, family business, love of women or men, or my method for measuring my e-wang.

Luis was saying these were smaller and therefore were further away from the heat. Thoughts?

Some of the guys were talking about this at the lemons race. The LT1 comes in 94-96 roadmasters and caprices, not just cop cars.
