We know that he never married or had a romantic relationship with a woman and that he lived with a male artist, Gian Giacomo Caprotti da Oreno, nicknamed Salai or Il Salaino, for 30 years. Salai had a reputation for being tremendously homosexual and is described lovingly by Da Vinci as a scoundrel and a peacock. Da Vinci's other strong relationship was with Count Francesco Melzi of Milanese royalty. Melzi studied beneath Da Vinci and was said to be his favorite student as Melzi stayed with Da Vinci for 14 years and inherited Da Vinci's paintings and works upon his death.
